Guarem is a drug with hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic action.

Release form and composition

The dosage form of Guarem is granules for oral administration: from light yellow to white (in sachets of 2.5 or 5 g, in a carton box 30 sachets).

The active ingredient in 1 sachet: guar gum (guar gum in the form of a gel-forming fiber) - 2.5 or 5 g.

Indications for use

  • hypercholesterolemia in cases of ineffectiveness of the dietary measures;
  • type 2 diabetes mellitus, occurring with obesity, in cases of ineffectiveness of the dietary measures (along with other drugs);
  • obesity, overweight.

Contraindications

  • stenotic / obstructive lesions of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • age up to 18 years (due to lack of data on the safety / effectiveness of therapy);
  • individual intolerance to guar gum.

Method of administration and dosage

Guarem is taken orally, preferably at the same time with food intake (with food or with a liquid - water, milk or juice, not less than 200 ml).

Single dose - 5 g.

Recommended frequency of use:

  • type 2 diabetes mellitus, overweight: 3 times a day;
  • hypercholesterolemia: 2–5 times a day.

It is advisable to start therapy with low doses, for example, 2.5 g of Guarem, which will help to reduce the likelihood of adverse reactions from the gastrointestinal tract.

Side effects

In most cases, Guarem's adverse reactions are mild and transient.

The disorders are usually limited to the digestive system. The development of flatulence is most often noted (about 50% of cases). The following disorders are also possible: nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea.

Guarem in very rare cases leads to obstruction of the esophagus or small intestine, and in most cases (about 50%) in the history of such patients reveal diseases of the intestine or esophagus.

Inhalation of dust containing guar gum can lead to sleep apnea and allergic rhinitis.

The likelihood of obstructive lesions of the gastrointestinal tract associated with taking Guarem may increase in patients with a history of functional disorders of the esophagus, intestines or stomach.

At the beginning of therapy, with the use of insulin or sulfonylurea derivatives, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase.

It should be borne in mind that the development of hypoglycemia while taking Guarem in combination with other hypoglycemic drugs may impair the ability to drive vehicles.

Drug interactions

Guarem can slow down the absorption of some drugs from the intestine, while no significant changes in bioavailability are noted.

Identified combinations leading to a decrease in bioavailability:

  • paracetamol, digoxin, bumetadine (of little clinical significance);
  • phenoxymethylpenicillin, metformin, glibenclamide, oral contraceptives (it is recommended to avoid combined use).

Store in a place protected from moisture at a temperature of 15-25 ° C. Keep out of the reach of children.
