Hexetidine is a topical antiseptic drug.

Release form and composition

The drug is produced in the form of a spray for local use, which is a transparent, slightly colored or colorless liquid with a characteristic odor (40 ml each in aluminum cylinders or polymer vials equipped with a dosing device, a spray bottle and a protective cap, in a cardboard package 1 cylinder or 1 bottle and instructions for use of Hexetidine).

Composition for 100 ml spray:

  • active ingredient: hexetidine - 200 mg;
  • auxiliary components: citric acid monohydrate, glycerol, macrogol lauryl ether, peppermint leaf oil, sodium saccharinate dihydrate, sodium hydroxide, ethanol, levomenthol, eucalyptol, purified water.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Hexetidine is a thiamine antagonist. Its antimicrobial effect is due to the suppression of the oxidative reactions of the metabolism of bacterial cells.

The drug is active against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including gram-positive bacteria and fungi of the genus Candida. In addition, it fights effectively against infections caused by Proteus spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The concentration of hexetidine 100 mg / ml is sufficient to suppress most bacterial cell strains. No emergence of resistance was noted.

The drug has a weak anesthetic effect on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx. In addition, it has antiviral properties and is active against viruses that infect the respiratory tract: PC virus (respiratory syncytial virus), influenza A virus and HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type 1).

Pharmacokinetics

Hexetidine is almost not absorbed into the systemic circulation, as it attaches to the mucous membranes. After a single use of the drug, traces of the active substance are found on the mucous membrane of the gums for another 65 hours. Within 10-14 hours after spraying, active concentrations of hexetidine are retained in dental plaque.

Indications for use

  • symptomatic therapy of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and larynx, namely acute and chronic tonsillitis (including ulcerative membranous tonsillitis and angina of the lateral ridges), stomatitis, gingivitis, pharyngitis, periodontal disease and glossitis;
  • symptomatic therapy of fungal diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx;
  • prevention of complications of an infectious nature before and after operations on the larynx and oral cavity, as well as in case of various injuries (including prevention of infection of the alveoli after tooth extraction);
  • oral hygiene (including eliminating bad breath).

Contraindications

  • erosive and ulcerative lesions of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity;
  • children under 3 years old;
  • hypersensitivity to the main or auxiliary components of the drug.
