Juniper is a genus of evergreen coniferous trees and shrubs, belonging to the Cypress family.
Distribution locations
There are both trees and shrubs. The distribution area of the genus extends in Eurasia - from the mountainous regions of the subtropics to the Arctic, and in North America - from the mountainous regions of northern Mexico to Alaska. The exception is the East African juniper, common in the mountainous regions of Africa.
Applications of juniper

The chemical composition of juniper
Pine berries contain carbohydrates (40%), wax, resins, tannins and dyes, essential oil (2%), organic acids (malic, acetic, formic), as well as many vitamins, macro- and microelements: aluminum, copper, iron, manganese, etc.
The composition of the essential oil contained in juniper berries includes camphene, terpenes, cadinene, terpineol, pinene, borneol.
Juniper needles contain ascorbic acid, and the bark contains coloring and tannins, resins, saponins and essential oils.
Medicinal properties of juniper
The plant is famous for its phytoncidal properties.
According to some scientists, about 30 kg of phytoncides evaporate from one hectare planted with juniper per day. This amount is quite enough to cleanse the atmosphere of a large city from pathogens.
In medical practice, cones are widely used. Berry-based preparations are prescribed as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, disinfectant, choleretic agent, as well as for diseases of the bladder and kidneys, flatulence and diarrhea.
Juniper essential oil has strong disinfectant properties. It is used for Trichomonas colpitis, neuralgia, rheumatic pains and radiculitis, for pain in muscles and joints, for polyarthritis.
The medicinal properties of juniper are used for diathesis, allergies, eczema and lichen, dermatitis.
The roots of the medicine are used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis, various skin diseases, bronchitis and stomach ulcers.
Juniper oil is obtained from wood by dry distillation - turpentine oil, which is used externally as a pain reliever.
In folk medicine, cones are used internally for malaria, edema, rheumatism, gout, and kidney disease. The plant is part of the mixtures used for metabolic polyarthritis.
Outwardly, cones are used for scabies and wet lichen. A decoction of juniper berries rinses the gums in case of inflammation.
Contraindications
The plant is toxic in high doses, so treatment should be carried out only under the supervision of doctors.
The plant is contraindicated in pregnancy, severe hypertension, with inflammation of the kidneys and in case of individual intolerance.
