Pyospermia

Pyospermia - the presence of an inflammatory process in the genitourinary system of a man
Pyospermia - the presence of an inflammatory process in the genitourinary system of a man

Pyospermia is the presence of an inflammatory process in the genitourinary system of a man, in which pus appears in the semen. At the same time, the seminal fluid often has a grayish-greenish tint and has an unpleasant odor. Sources of pus can be various parts of the genital organs, but mainly these are the epididymis, seminal vesicles, urethra or prostate gland. Toxins are secreted by microorganisms and have a negative effect on spermatozoa, disrupting their mobility and increasing the number of pathological forms, which naturally makes pyospermia and pregnancy practically incompatible concepts.

Causes of pyospermia

Often the causes of pyospermia are serious diseases such as tuberculosis of the testicles or prostate gland. Often, pyospermia is accompanied by diseases such as oligospermia, hemospermia, teratozoospermia.

The cause of pyospermia can be the advanced stages of urethritis, epididymitis, orchitis and other diseases, leading to the fact that the sperm is filled with pathogens and cellular decay products that release toxic toxins.

Diagnosis of pyospermia

Regardless of the reason, the presence of pus in the semen always indicates the presence of any urological disease. For adequate treatment of pyospermia, a man needs to undergo a comprehensive urological examination, including the following studies:

  • ultrasound examination of the genitourinary system;
  • examination for the presence of diseases transmitted through sexual contact;
  • sperm culture for antibiotic sensitivity;
  • sowing of sperm for flora.

Pyospermia symptoms

The main external symptom of pyospermia is a significant deterioration in sperm quality. The seminal fluid becomes grayish-green in color and has an unpleasant, sometimes rather pungent odor. Since this disease slows down sperm motility, pregnancy with pyospermia seems unlikely.

According to the results of spermogram, an increased content of leukocytes is determined. Often, pathological processes, pathogenic microorganisms and remnants of cellular decay are found in semen.

If there is pus in the semen, the following signs should be suspected in the patient:

  • swelling in the groin;
  • pain in the pelvic region;
  • painful erection or erectile dysfunction;
  • swelling of the scrotum;
  • headache, general weakness, fever;
  • painful sensations during ejaculation and urination.

It is worth noting that there is also a false pyospermia, when pus enters the semen as a result of its passage through the urethra and seminal canals, and is not formed directly during spermatogenesis.

Pyospermia treatment

As for the treatment of this disease, first of all, it consists in identifying the cause. Pyospermia is not an independent disease, but rather a sign indicating the presence of an inflammatory process in the genitourinary system. After identifying the cause, anti-inflammatory therapy can be prescribed.

If we talk directly about the process of treating pyospermia, then it should be carried out under the supervision of an experienced doctor. Adequate treatment is possible only after a final diagnosis confirmed by a comprehensive examination. A wrong diagnosis can lead to serious complications.
