Toe deformity
Brief description of the problem
Nowadays, deformity of the toes is one of the most common problems in orthopedics. It occurs due to pathological changes in muscles or as a result of various injuries and bruises.
As you know, the movement of the fingers is controlled by several muscles, the action of which, in fact, provides the mobility of the foot. Deformation of the finger leads to a violation of the functionality of the muscles. They cannot perform their usual tasks, and over time, this dysfunction causes various complications. For example, in patients with flat feet, lengthening of the foot is noted, and with an increase in the tone of the short flexor, a claw-like deformity of the big toe. If the tone of the long flexor of the fingers increases, then the so-called hammer-like deformation is formed.
In modern orthopedics, deformity of the toes occupies about 15-20% of the number of confirmed diagnoses associated with impaired muscle and joint function. Most often, the problem manifests itself in women, which is associated with the characteristics of their body and the structure of the skeleton.
Causes of deformation
The main cause of the disease is an imbalance in the flexor and extensor muscles. It is caused by a variety of reasons - arthritis, traumatic injuries, flat feet. In addition, deformity of the first toe of the foot often occurs under the influence of concomitant diseases, for example, cerebral palsy, or various inflammatory processes (psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis). Also, deformation of the finger can be due to the development of diabetes mellitus.
Disease symptoms
The main signs of deformation are:
- the appearance of corns at the point of contact between shoes and joints, which is explained by increased stress on the joint and subsequent rubbing;
- the appearance of ulcers in the head of the metatarsal bones;
- pain when walking.
Deformity of the first toe and other similar problems require immediate medical attention. Otherwise, the pathology continues to develop and over time leads to very serious consequences and complications, not to mention the fact that a person's foot acquires an unattractive appearance and significantly reduces the quality of life.
Diagnostics of various kinds of deformities is carried out on the basis of clinical data and the identification of diseases that could lead to impaired muscle functionality. For this, the most commonly used techniques are X-rays (detects arthritis) and blood tests (helps to exclude diabetes mellitus).
Deformation of the toes - treatment of the disease
The appointment of a treatment method largely depends on how the deformity of the finger manifests itself and on the severity of the existing symptoms. In the case of flat feet, patients are shown wearing orthopedic shoes, as well as therapeutic exercises, which allows to restore the normal functioning of all muscles and joints. If a person has soft tissue fixation and persistent deformation of the thumb, then doctors recommend resorting to surgical intervention. Use effective corrective underwear to maintain a beautiful female shape.
Currently, the most commonly used types of surgery are arthroplasty and arthrodesis. In the first case, the surface of the articular bones is treated, aimed at straightening the fingers. With advanced deformities, arthrodesis will be more effective - removal of the joint and fixation of the bone in the desired position.
