Euonymus is the name of a genus of plants that unites many species. In the European part of Russia, two of them are most widespread - European euonymus and warty euonymus.
Chemical composition
Leaves and fruits of European spindle tree, containing the cardiac glycoside evonimine, triglyceride triacetin (which increases blood pressure), and traces of alkaloids, are used as medicinal plant materials. The bark and roots contain the high molecular weight hydrocarbon gutta-percha, which is released as juice and subsequently hardens. The seeds contain fatty oil.
Due to its beneficial properties, warty euonymus has also found application in folk medicine. For medicinal purposes, branches, wood, fruits and leaves of the plant are used. The bark of the branches contains carbohydrates, tannins, polyunsaturated fatty acids. The leaves contain alkaloids, ascorbic acid, flavonoids.
Beneficial features
Euonymus is used in folk medicine for the preparation of decoctions and infusions with antiemetic, antiviral, laxative, antiparasitic, choleretic and antispasmodic effects.
Indications for use
Euonymus is used in folk medicine for diseases such as: migraine, constipation, vomiting, hypertension, bronchitis, hepatitis, dysbiosis, decreased potency, head lice.
Contraindications
The use of euonymus is contraindicated during pregnancy, with bradycardia, heart failure, aortic valve defect and decompensated coronary insufficiency.
All types of euonymus are poisonous plants. The greatest danger is represented by fruits that are outwardly quite attractive to humans. In case of poisoning, dyspeptic disorders, vomiting, loss of strength, convulsions are noted.
Home remedies from euonymus
At home, the following remedies can be prepared from a plant:
- Decoction of the bark. A teaspoon of crushed raw materials is taken in 400 ml of water, kept for five minutes in boiling water, after which it is infused for an hour, and then filtered. The resulting broth can be used as a laxative (half a glass 1 time per day on an empty stomach) or a heart remedy (one tablespoon 3 times a day);
- Alcoholic tincture of the bark. 1 part of the raw material is infused in 10 parts of 70% alcohol. It is used as a pressure reducing agent, 6-8 drops 3 times a day, together with water. Duration of treatment is 2 weeks;
- Decoction of branches. A tablespoon of crushed raw materials is poured into 400 ml of water, boiled for five minutes, infused for two hours, and then filtered. It is taken for migraines and neuroses 3 times a day, 1 tablespoon for 2 weeks;
- A decoction of euonymus leaves. A tablespoon of raw materials should be poured with 200 ml of water, boiled for three to four minutes, insist, strain and take 2-3 times a day for a tablespoon as a diuretic and for ascites;
- Infusion of leaves. The leaves are crushed, then 5 tablespoons of raw materials are infused for two hours in a liter of boiling water, after which the infusion is filtered. Used externally as an insecticidal agent;
- Infusion of euonymus fruits. Half a teaspoon of fruit is poured with 400 ml of boiling water, infused and filtered. It is taken with a decrease in potency, a tablespoon 3 times a day for 3 weeks.
