First aid for domestic injuries

A variety of injuries can be received not only at work or on the way to work and back, but also where, it would seem, everything is familiar and safe - at home. Moreover, perhaps the most traumatic place in an apartment is the kitchen: sharp knives, hot pots and pans are often a source of wounds, cuts, and burns. In addition, you can get injured during any repair work, caring for pets, while working in the garage or in the country. Even reading a book, you can get hurt: cuts in the skin with the edges of the paper are usually deep and take a long time to heal.

When is the doctor's help needed?

Household injuries usually seem like something frivolous, but in some cases, you cannot do without a visit to a doctor. Consultation and assistance of a qualified specialist is necessary if:

  • bleeding from the wound does not stop for a quarter of an hour or more;
  • if the wound is contaminated with earth;
  • if damage (even minor) is caused by an animal;
  • if the wound, abrasion or burn is large or deep;
  • with any third-degree burns or more;
  • for wounds caused by contaminated or rusty objects;
  • if in the wound, even after washing, there are chips, fragments, particles of dirt.

Wounds received while working on the ground, as a rule, require, in addition to direct therapeutic measures, the introduction of anti-tetanus serum, so it is better not to risk it and consult a doctor, even if the wound seems small. You also need the help of a doctor if you have not been able to remove dirt and foreign bodies from the wound yourself. For wound healing, its surfaces must be absolutely clean; any foreign particle will inevitably become a source of infection and wound suppuration. Any wound with signs of inflammation and suppuration requires immediate consultation with a doctor; such wounds cannot be treated on their own. In addition, as a rule, the help of a surgeon is required in the treatment of deep and long wounds: they are sutured to speed up healing and to avoid the formation of rough scars.

Self-treatment of minor domestic injuries: procedure

The first step in getting a wound in everyday life should be rinsing it with water, which will help remove dirt and foreign matter from the wound. If you replace the water with a solution of hydrogen peroxide, the washing efficiency will be higher, in addition, peroxide has a hemostatic effect. If the bleeding continues after washing, you can press a gauze swab or a piece of clean tissue to the wound and wait 5-10 minutes: this time is enough to stop capillary bleeding. If you get a burn, first of all, you need to remove excess heat from the damaged area of the skin, for which the burned area is washed with cold water. It is impossible to lubricate the burn site with oil: the oil film, on the contrary, will make it difficult to remove heat, which will provoke further tissue damage.
