"Grandmothers" methods of ARVI treatment, which it is high time to forget about
In an effort to quickly cure the baby and alleviate his condition, many parents forget about common sense and succumb to the temptation to try folk methods that are warmly recommended by older people and dubious publications about health. Most of these tips have nothing to do with evidence-based medicine and often do more harm than good. Consider the most popular "grandmother's" methods of treatment, which are familiar to many of us from childhood.
Onions and garlic for a cold
Someone recommends to bury the juice of onions or garlic in the nose, and someone simply to put garlic cloves in the nostrils. Both methods are destructive: the caustic sap of these plants, even diluted with water or oil, burns the mucous membrane. As a result, the patient experiences severe pain and burning sensation, and even risks losing the olfactory function. To facilitate nasal breathing, the use of saline solutions and oil drops is often sufficient, sometimes vasoconstrictors can be used (for example, at night).
Rubbing with vodka and vinegar
This method is used for fever, it really helps to reduce body temperature, but the game is not worth the candle: the wrong concentration of rubdown solution can cause burns. Alcohol and vinegar are quickly absorbed from the surface of the skin, entering the baby's bloodstream and causing intoxication. Isn't it better to rub the baby with plain water or give him an antipyretic if the temperature rises above 38?
Banks
A procedure that is terrible not only in its essence, but also in its appearance. Banks treated coughs, believing that they are able to activate blood circulation in the internal organs. This is a misconception: the warming effect from cans does not penetrate deeper than a centimeter. And hemorrhage in the skin is fraught with vascular damage. This group also includes mustard plasters, which often cause burns. For safe heating, it is better to use special ointments and dry heat.
Hot inhalation
A memory from childhood: you are sitting over a hot steaming pan, covered with a blanket like a tent, you sweat profusely, try not to inhale deeply scalding steam, and slowly eat potatoes from the pan. The dangers of such a procedure are obvious - burns to the respiratory tract and the whole body if a child accidentally knocks over a container with hot potatoes or herbal decoction. Inhalation itself is very effective if the temperature of the steam is controlled. To do this, use safe modern inhalers that are sold in pharmacies.
Gargle with kerosene
In Soviet times, even some doctors recommended gargling a sore throat with kerosene. Allegedly, he is able to increase blood circulation, thereby accelerating recovery. Kerosene is poison. It can cause burns and irritation of the mucous membranes, quickly penetrate the body and cause severe intoxication. Surprisingly, folk healers consider this oil product a real panacea, they treat any ailments, from lice to clinical depression. Naturally, kerosene should be used only for its intended purpose - as a fuel or solvent. And keep it away from children!
Of course, not all traditional medicine methods and the advice of our grandmothers are harmful. For colds, drinking with raspberry jam is wonderful, gargling with herbal infusions and warm milk with honey soothes a sore throat. But all these remedies are useless alone, they should only be used as an adjunct to the main treatment.
