Hormone therapy
Hormone therapy (hormonotherapia; Greek hormao - to induce, set in motion + therapéia - treatment, medical care; synonym: hormonal therapy) - the use of natural hormones or their synthetic analogues for medicinal purposes.
Types of hormone therapy:
- substitution (substituens) - based on replenishing the insufficient function of the endocrine glands by introducing hormones of the same glands or their synthetic analogs;
- stimulating (stimulans) - based on the activation of the functions of the endocrine glands mainly through the introduction of tropic hormones (tropines) of the pituitary gland;
- inhibitory (synonym: blocking hormone therapy) - based on the suppression of the function of the endocrine glands as a result of the introduction of hormones of the same glands or their synthetic analogs, or the use of hormones that act oppositely to tissues and organs.
