Strepsils is a combined antiseptic preparation for topical use in otolaryngology and dentistry.

Release form and composition

Strepsils is available in the form of tablets for resorption: round, in the form of a caramel mass with a translucent structure, the letter "S" is depicted on two flat surfaces, uneven coloring, white bloom, the presence of air bubbles in the tablet structure, slight uneven edges are allowed; yellow - sugar-free with lemon flavor, and with honey and lemon; light orange - with orange flavor and vitamin C; turquoise for sore throat and nasal congestion with menthol and eucalyptus; dark orange color - with a warming effect (2, 4, 6, 8 or 12 pieces in blisters, in a cardboard box 1 or 2 blisters).

1 tablet contains active ingredients: 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol - 1.2 mg, amylmetacresol - 0.6 mg; additionally for tablets with menthol and eucalyptus: eucalyptus leaf oil - 2.57 mg: additionally for tablets with vitamin C with orange flavor; ascorbic acid - 100 mg.

Content of auxiliary components:

• sugar-free lemon-flavored tablets: tartaric acid, sodium saccharinate, lemon flavor 74940-74, isomaltose, quinoline yellow dye (E104), maltitol syrup;
• tablets with honey and lemon: tartaric acid, honey, sugar syrup (sucrose and water), peppermint leaf oil, lemon oil (without terpenes), liquid dextrose (poly- and oligosaccharides, dextrose), quinoline yellow dye (E104);
• tablets with menthol and eucalyptus: tartaric acid, indigo carmine, liquid sucrose, liquid dextrose (dextrose, oligo- and polysaccharides);
• tablets with vitamin C with orange flavor: orange flavor 78300-34, levomenthol, propylene glycol, sunset yellow dye, crimson Ponso 4R dye, tartaric acid, liquid sucrose, liquid dextrose (dextrose, oligo- and polysaccharides);

The antiseptic effect of Strepsils is provided by its combined composition, which includes a benzene derivative (2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol) and phenol (amylmetacresol). Efficiency against pathogens is determined by the mechanism of action of the two active components of the drug, associated with the coagulation of proteins of cells infected with microbes and fungi, and the interaction of the drug with lipids of cell membranes.

The following properties of the drug have been confirmed in vitro: activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms, antifungal and antiviral effects.

A decrease in the intensity of a sore throat occurs 5 minutes after the start of the tablet resorption. In addition, there is a softening effect on the oral mucosa and a decrease in throat irritation (including swallowing and speaking). The duration of the analgesic effect is up to 120 minutes, the pronounced analgesic effect occurs after three days of treatment.

Pharmacological action of other active ingredients contained in Strepsils:

• honey and lemon: have an additional soothing effect on sore throat;
• essential oils of eucalyptus and menthol: help relieve nasal congestion;
• vitamin C: has antioxidant activity, the drug helps the body to replenish its deficiency.

Pharmacokinetics

The metabolism of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol occurs in the liver, the substance is excreted through the kidneys.

Indications for use

The use of Strepsils is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of pain in the throat, mouth, larynx in infectious and inflammatory diseases: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis (including diseases of a professional nature - in speakers, teachers, workers in the chemical, coal industry, etc.), inflammation of the mucous membrane mouth and gums (gingivitis, thrush, aphthous stomatitis) and hoarseness. Menthol and eucalyptus tablets reduce nasal congestion.

Contraindications

• syndrome of glucose-galactose malabsorption, fructose intolerance, sucrase or isomaltase deficiency (with the exception of sugar-free lemon-flavored tablets);
• children under 5 years old; tablets with a warming effect up to 6 years;
• hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

With caution, Strepsils should be taken during pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Tablets with honey-lemon filler are recommended with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Instructions for the use of Strepsils: method and dosage

The tablets are intended for topical administration by placing in the mouth and slowly dissolving.

Recommended dosage: 1 pc. with an interval of 2-3 hours, but no more than 8 pcs. in 24 hours. The duration of the course is 3 days.
