9 months Folic acid is a drug that replenishes folic acid deficiency.

Release form and composition

Dosage form release 9 months Folic acid - film-coated tablets: yellow, biconvex, round; the core on the fracture is light yellow with splashes (in a cardboard box 3, 6 or 9 blisters of 10 tablets each).

Composition of 1 tablet:

  • active ingredient: folic acid - 0.4 mg;
  • auxiliary components: lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, Kollidon VA-64, colloidal silicon dioxide;
  • shell: Opadry II (series 85) [polyvinyl alcohol, talc, macrogol, titanium dioxide (E171), yellow iron oxide (E172), quinoline yellow-based aluminum varnish (E104)].

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Folic acid is a vitamin of group B (B 9, B c), it can be synthesized by the intestinal microflora. It is restored in the body to tetrahydrofolic acid, which is a coenzyme and is necessary for various metabolic processes.

Folic acid is required for the formation of normoblasts and the normal maturation of megaloblasts. Participates in the synthesis of nucleic acids, amino acids (including glycine, methionine), pyrimidines, purines, in the exchange of histidine and choline, and also stimulates erythropoiesis.

Pharmacokinetics

Folic acid is fully and well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, mainly in the upper duodenum. It binds to plasma proteins almost completely.

Under the influence of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, it is activated in the liver, turning into tetrahydrofolic acid. T max (time to reach maximum concentration) ranges from 30 to 60 minutes. Penetrates the blood-brain and placental barriers into breast milk.

Excretion occurs mainly by the kidneys in the form of metabolites, with a significant excess of the daily dose - in an unchanged form.

It is excreted using hemodialysis.

Indications for use

  • folic acid deficiency;
  • defects of the neural tube in the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (prevention of development).

Contraindications

  • cobalamin deficiency;
  • malignant neoplasms;
  • pernicious anemia;
  • childhood;
  • individual intolerance to any component of the drug.

Instructions for use 9 months of Folic acid: method and dosage

The drug is taken orally, preferably after meals.

Recommended dosage regimen:

  • folic acid deficiency: 1 tablet a day;
  • prevention of the development of neural tube defects in the fetus (I trimester of pregnancy): 1-2 tablets per day.

Side effects

  • digestive system: anorexia, nausea, bitterness in the mouth, bloating;
  • allergic reactions: hyperthermia, itching, skin rash, erythema, bronchospasm.

During a long course, the development of hypovitaminosis B 12 can be observed.

Overdose

Overdose can occur with prolonged use (longer than 1–2 months) of folic acid in doses exceeding 1 mg per day, as well as as a result of combined therapy with vitamin and mineral complexes.

special instructions

In order to prevent hypovitaminosis, a balanced diet is more preferable. Foods rich in folic acid include nuts, fresh liver, green vegetables (carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, spinach), legumes, beets, cheese, cereals, eggs.

For the treatment of B 12 -deficient (pernicious), aplastic and normocytic anemia, as well as anemia refractory to therapy for 9 months, folic acid is not used.

The drug for pernicious anemia improves hematological parameters, but at the same time masks neurological complications. Until pernicious anemia is ruled out, it is not recommended to prescribe the drug in a daily dose of more than 0.1 mg (except for taking by lactating / pregnant women).

It should be taken into account that patients on hemodialysis should be prescribed increased doses of the drug.

During treatment, cholestyramine should be taken 4-6 hours before or 1 hour after taking 9 months of folic acid, antacids - after 2 hours.

It should be borne in mind that drugs with antibacterial action can distort (underestimate) the results of a microbiological assessment of the concentration of folic acid in erythrocytes and plasma. When using the drug in large doses, as well as during long-term therapy, the concentration of vitamin B 12 may decrease.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

The drug is indicated in preparation for pregnancy (1–3 months before the planned pregnancy) and during the first few weeks after conception (I trimester).

Pediatric use

According to the instructions, folic acid is not prescribed for 9 months in childhood.

Drug interactions

Possible interactions:

  • oral contraceptives, pain relievers (long-term use), drugs with anticonvulsants (including carbamazepine and phenytoin), estrogens: an increase in the need for folic acid;
  • phenytoin: a decrease in its effectiveness (an increase in its dose may be required);
  • trimethoprim, methotrexate, triamterene, pyrimethamine: decrease in the effectiveness of folic acid due to inhibition of dihydrofolate reductase (instead of 9 months of folic acid, patients are prescribed calcium folinate);
  • cholestyramine, antacids, sulfonamides (including sulfasalazine): decreased absorption of folic acid;
  • chloramphenicol, neomycin, polymyxins, tetracyclines: reduced absorption of folic acid.
