Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Bearberry leaves contain a complex of biologically active substances. The uroantiseptic and diuretic properties of the plant are due to the action of the phenolic glycosides arbutin and methylarbutin, as well as hydroquinone and its methyl ester. Bearberry flavonoids enhance diuresis and intensive excretion of sodium and chlorine ions from the body. Due to the high content of tannins and phenolic glycosides in bearberry leaves, the drug has an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect due to the formation of complex compounds with proteins of microorganisms.
Pharmacokinetics
The main biologically active substance of Uriflorin is arbutin. When taken orally, arbutin is rapidly absorbed. Under the influence of the intestinal microflora, the substance is intensively cleaved to form free hydroquinone. After absorption in the intestine, hydroquinone is metabolized in the liver to form conjugates with sulfuric and glucuronic acids. Hydroquinone sulfate and glucuronide are actively excreted in the urine after a few hours. The maximum excretion is observed in the first 6 hours after taking the drug inside. After 24 hours, 70–75% of the dose taken is excreted.
