Unithiol is a complexing agent of detoxification action.
Release form and composition
Unithiol is available in the form of a solution for intramuscular and subcutaneous administration: transparent, pinkish or colorless, with a weak hydrogen sulfide odor (5 ml in glass ampoules, 5 ampoules in a blister strip, 2 packs in a cardboard box).
Composition of 1 ml solution:
- active substance: unitiol (sodium dimercaptopropanesulfonate monohydrate) - 50 mg;
- auxiliary components: sulfuric acid 0.1 M, Trilon B (disodium edetate), water for injection.
Indications for use
- poisoning with bismuth, arsenic, chromium, mercury, cardiac glycosides;
- delirious psychosis;
- diabetic polyneuropathy;
- Wilson-Konovalov disease (hepatocerebral dystrophy);
- chronic alcoholism (as part of complex treatment).
Contraindications
- high blood pressure;
- insufficient liver function;
- hypersensitivity to the drug.
Method of administration and dosage
Unithiol is administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
Recommended doses:
- arsenic poisoning: 5-10 ml (5 mg per 1 kg of body weight) 3-4 times on the first day, 2-3 times on the second day and 1-2 times on subsequent days;
- mercury poisoning: according to the scheme given above, within 6-7 days (until the symptoms of intoxication disappear);
- poisoning with cardiac glycosides: 5-10 ml of 5% aqueous solution of the drug 3-4 times a day in the first two days, then 5-10 ml 1-2 times a day (until the disappearance of the cardiotoxic effect);
- relief of delirium: 4–5 ml of Unitiol once;
- Wilson's disease - Konovalov: 5-10 ml of 5% aqueous solution intramuscularly 1 time per day every day or every other day; one course of treatment requires 25-30 injections, if necessary, the course is repeated after 3-4 months;
- chronic alcoholism: 3-5 ml 2-3 times a week.
Side effects
With the introduction of Unithiol, nausea, pallor of the skin, tachycardia, dizziness, and allergic reactions may occur.
special instructions
In acute intoxications, treatment is not limited to the use of an antidote. The patient is given gastric lavage, oxygen therapy, and glucose is administered.
Drug interactions
Unithiol should not be used concurrently with drugs containing alkalis and heavy metals, since such combinations contribute to the rapid decomposition of unitiol.
