Powder for preparation of suspension for oral administration Smecta
Powder for preparation of suspension for oral administration Smecta

Smecta is a medicinal product of natural origin with antidiarrheal and adsorbing action.

Release form and composition

Smecta is available in the form of a powder for the preparation of a suspension for oral administration (orange and vanilla): from grayish-white to light grayish-yellow, with a weak vanilla or slight nonspecific odor (3.76 g each in laminated paper sachets, in a cardboard box 10 or 30 sachets).

Composition for 1 sachet:

  • active substance: dioctahedral smectite - 3 g;
  • auxiliary components: sodium saccharinate, dextrose monohydrate, vanillin (for powder with vanilla flavor) or vanilla and orange flavors (for powder with orange flavor).

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Dioctahedral smectite is a mixed silicate of aluminum and magnesium, which is of natural origin. This substance provides binding and further excretion of various toxins and gases from the gastrointestinal tract.

Dioctahedral smectite is characterized by a stereometric structure and looks like a highly plastic substance of increased viscosity. These characteristics determine the selectivity of the sorption action of Smecta, which selectively adsorbs bacteria and viruses from the lumen of the digestive canal, and the increased enveloping ability of the drug, which has a positive effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa.

The active component of Smecta interacts with mucin glycoproteins, which are contained in the mucous secretion of the gastrointestinal tract, and forms polyvalent bonds with them, increasing the cytoprotective properties of mucus and its resistance to irritants: pathogenic bacteria, toxic substances produced by them, hydrogen ions (hydrochloric acid), bile salts and other aggressive factors.

Studies of the effectiveness of Smecta compared with placebo, conducted randomly and including testing the drug's effect on 602 patients aged 1 month to 3 years with diagnosed acute diarrhea, proved that in the group of patients who took the drug in combination with oral rehydration solutions, voiding frequency decreased significantly during the first 72 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

Aluminum, which is part of dioctahedral smectite, is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, including in diseases of the digestive tract, accompanied by symptoms of colitis and colonopathy. The active substance of Smecta has a slight swelling effect, when taken in the recommended doses, it does not change the physiological time of passage of the consumed food through the intestines, is not metabolized, excreted unchanged and does not stain feces. The drug is X-ray transparent.

Indications for use

  • chronic and acute diarrhea (in violation of the quality composition of food or diet, diarrhea of medicinal and allergic origin);
  • diarrhea of infectious etiology (as part of complex treatment);
  • symptomatic therapy of heartburn, discomfort, bloating in the abdomen and other signs of dyspepsia that can occur in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

  • intestinal obstruction;
  • deficiency of isomaltase / sucrase enzymes;
  • glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome;
  • intolerance to fructose;
  • hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the drug.

According to the instructions, Smecta should be prescribed with caution to patients with an indication of a history of severe chronic constipation.

Instructions for use Smekta: method and dosage

Smecta is intended for oral administration after meals (with esophagitis) or between meals (for other indications). The contents of the sachets are dissolved in water.

How to dilute Smecta for adults: the powder must be gradually poured into 100 ml of water (1/2 cup) and stirred evenly until a suspension is obtained. Divide the prescribed daily dose into three doses during the day.

It is necessary to dilute Smecta for children in a bottle (50 ml). You can also mix the powder with one of the semi-liquid products (baby food, mashed potatoes, porridge, compote). Divide the daily dose into several doses.

For acute diarrhea, the daily dose for adults is 6 sachets. Children under 1 year old are prescribed 2 sachets per day for the first 3 days, then 1 sachet per day. For children over 1 year old, in the first 3 days, 4 sachets per day are used, then 2 sachets per day.

For other indications, the daily dose of Smecta for children under 1 year old is 1 sachet per day, children 1–2 years old - 1–2 sachets per day, children over 2 years old - 2-3 sachets per day, for adults - 3 sachets per day.

The duration of therapy is from 3 to 7 days.

Side effects

  • digestive system: rarely (in clinical trials) - mild constipation that goes away on its own after adjusting the dose);
  • allergic reactions: very rarely - itching, rash, urticaria, angioedema.

Overdose

When taking Smecta in high doses, side effects such as bezoar or severe constipation are possible.

special instructions

Measures to rehydrate the body simultaneously with treatment with Smecta in adult patients are carried out as needed. The choice of a set of measures to replenish fluid depends on the characteristics of the patient, his age and the course of the disease.

For acute diarrhea in children, Smecta should be used in combination with rehydration measures.

Other medicines should be taken separately from Smecta, the interval between doses should be at least 1-2 hours.

The drug does not affect the ability to operate machinery and drive motor vehicles.

Reviews about Smecta

According to reviews, Smecta has proven itself especially well in the treatment of newborns and children. The drug acts quickly and gently, eliminating the symptoms of intoxication and helping to get rid of heartburn and digestive problems resulting from an infectious disease. Most mothers agree that the medicine must be in the home medicine cabinet. This is due to the pleasant taste and convenience of the dosage form for small patients, good tolerance, a limited number of contraindications and the ability to significantly reduce the duration of the disease and the financial costs of treatment. Numerous studies, including those carried out by SIGEP specialists, prove the reduction in the duration of illness.

Smecta is considered effective in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux in children during the first 4 weeks of life, and is also recommended for prophylactic use to prevent the development of chronic diarrhea in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

The price of Smecta in pharmacies

On average, the price for Smecta with vanilla flavor varies from 127 to 155 rubles, and with orange flavor - from 139 to 156 rubles (per package containing 10 sachets).
