The active ingredient is xylometazoline. Xylene is a pharmacological drug based on vasoconstrictor substances used to treat the common cold.
Composition and form of release
According to the instructions, Xilen is available in the form of nasal drops.
In addition to the active substance, nasal drops also contain auxiliary components: benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, water.
Xylen solution is produced in concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05%. In a plastic bottle (or glass), 10 ml of this drug.
Pharmacological action of Xilen
According to the instructions, Xilen has a decongestant effect due to the provision of a local vasoconstrictor effect. With narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, edema and hyperemia decrease, and the patency of the nasal passages is restored, which facilitates nasal breathing and relieves nasal congestion. Xylene begins to have an effect almost immediately after application, the effect lasts up to 10 hours.
Since the drug is used topically, it is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream. It is not possible to detect its concentration in the blood after use with modern methods.
Indications for use
Xylene is used for acute rhinitis caused by viral respiratory infections. Also, the drug is indicated for acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, with otitis media (as part of a complex treatment in order to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa). Xilen is used before rhinoscopy (endoscopic examination of the nasal passages and nasopharynx).

Xilen should be used with extreme caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, and ischemic heart disease. If there are contraindications to Xylen, you should not use this drug on its own, discuss treatment with similar drugs with your doctor.
Side effect
With prolonged (or too frequent) use of Xylen, dryness, irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa may occur (this may be manifested by sneezing, burning, hypersecretion of mucus). Rarely, vomiting, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmia, blurred vision, insomnia, depression may occur. For the occurrence of such side effects, the use of Xylen must be long-term and in excess doses.
Use of Xylene during pregnancy and lactation
The use of Xylen during pregnancy and during breastfeeding is not recommended. By itself, the drug does not have a negative effect on the fetus, but it can affect the blood pressure of a pregnant woman, as well as the vascular tone of the placenta.
Method of administration and dosage
Xylene should be instilled into each nasal passage (after preliminary cleansing) 1-2 drops of a 0.1% solution (for adults and children over the age) no more than 2-3 times a day.
For infants and children under 6 years of age, it is recommended to use a 0.05% Xylen solution, 1-2 drops in each nasal passage once or twice a day.
This drug should not be used more than 3 times a day or more than 5 days.
Xylen overdose
In case of an overdose, the above symptoms of side effects occur. Treatment is aimed at stopping the use of the drug and eliminating the symptoms that have arisen.
Interaction with other medicinal products
Xylene should not be used simultaneously with MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitors, as well as with tricyclic antidepressants.
Special instructions for the use of Xilen
