Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Levomethyl is a combined drug for external use that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.

The active substance of Levomethyl - chloramphenicol - is an antibiotic. It inhibits the mechanism of protein synthesis of microorganisms, which determines its pronounced antimicrobial and bacteriostatic effect. Shows activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (streptococci, staphylococci, intestinal and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and others). Chloramphenicol easily penetrates deep into tissues without damaging the biological membranes of cells. The antibacterial effect of the substance does not diminish in the presence of necrotic masses and pus.

Dioxomethyltetrahydropyrimidine normalizes the metabolism of nucleic acids, stimulates regeneration processes in wounds, the formation of granulation tissue, and epithelization of wounds. In addition, dioxomethyltetrahydropyrimidine has anti-inflammatory (dehydrating) effects.

Pharmacokinetics

A small amount of active substances penetrates into the general bloodstream. The drug has no systemic effect.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Levomethyl is indicated for use in purulent wounds (including those infected with mixed microflora) in the first (purulent-necrotic) phase of the wound process.

For adults and children over 1 year old, the drug is applied once a day directly to the damaged skin area at the rate of 0.3 g per 1 cm 2 of the wound surface, or applied to a sterile gauze napkin at the rate of 0.3-0.6 g per 1 cm 2 the wound surface, then cover the damaged area of the body with a napkin and apply a bandage to fix it. If the wound is deep, it is loosely filled with sterile gauze soaked in ointment. The drug is injected into the purulent cavity with a syringe through a drainage tube or catheter, preheating the ointment to 35–36 ° C.

It is recommended to dress once a day, every day, until the wound is completely cleared of pus and necrotic masses. The maximum daily dose of the ointment should not exceed the amount corresponding to 3 g of chloramphenicol.

The duration of the course of treatment with Levomethyl depends on the severity and course of the disease and is 5-14 days.
