Iodoform is an external preparation with antiseptic action.
Release form and composition
The drug is produced in the form of a substance-powder (in two-layer plastic bags (sachets) of 150, 200, 500, 1000 g; in cans (jars) of 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000 g; in polyethylene terephthalate bags of 150, 200, 500, 1000 g).
The composition of Iodoform is 98% represented by the active ingredient triiodomethane.
Pharmacological properties
The active substance of the drug - triiodomethane (lemon-yellow fine-crystalline powder) - makes up 98% of the drug. This chemical compound (CHI 3) is easily soluble in ether and chloroform, slightly soluble in gasoline, organic oils, alcohol, and practically insoluble in water.
Iodoform is a broad-spectrum antiseptic; it decomposes slowly after being applied to problem areas, releasing iodine under the influence of light, air and tissue exudate. Iodine has antimicrobial, deodorizing, anti-inflammatory and absorbing effect, helps cleanse wounds and further their granulation.
Iodine albuminates, formed on the wound surface, have an anesthetic and astringent effect, preventing irritation of the receptors. According to the classification of GOST 12.1.007-76, taking into account the degree of influence of iodoform on the body after application to the skin, it is referred to the 3rd class of moderately hazardous substances. The drug has no local irritating and resorptive-toxic effect.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Iodoform is prescribed for the treatment of ulcers, infected wounds as an antiseptic (disinfectant) agent.
Contraindications
A contraindication to the use of the drug is hypersensitivity to iodine.

Side effects
Perhaps the development of the phenomenon of iodism (inflammation of the mucous membranes of non-infectious genesis, which occurs with individual intolerance to drugs containing iodine or overdose).

Overdose can cause the development of iodism, the signs of which are lacrimation, salivation, rhinitis, urticaria, swelling of the nasal mucosa, eosinophilia, shock, Quincke's edema.
