Iodoxide is a local antiseptic preparation used in gynecological practice.
Release form and composition
Iodoxide is produced in the form of vaginal suppositories: torpedo-shaped, brown with a brownish tint, marbling of the surface is possible (5 pcs. In blisters, 2 or 3 packs in a cardboard box).
1 suppository contains:
- Active ingredient: povidone-iodine - 200 mg (in the form of a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine);
- Auxiliary components: polyethylene oxide 400, polyethylene oxide 1500.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Iodoxide is an antiseptic drug that blocks the amino groups of cellular proteins and has a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action. The drug is active against protozoa, bacteria (including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), viruses, fungi.
The active component of the drug - iodine - forms a complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone), which is an iodophore capable of binding iodine. The content of active iodine in the body is 0.1–1%. Upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes, a gradual and uniform release of iodine occurs, which has a bactericidal effect on most microorganisms. At the site of application, a colored layer of small thickness is observed, which persists until the complete release of the entire administered dose of iodine.
Pharmacokinetics
Contact of povidone-iodine with mucous membranes can lead to the absorption of iodine and an increase in its level in the blood (the concentration of the substance returns to its original value 7-14 days after the last application of Iodoxide). In patients with normal thyroid function, increased iodine absorption does not affect its hormonal function.
Iodine is excreted mainly through the kidneys. With intravaginal use, the half-life is approximately 48 hours.
Indications for use
- Bacterial vaginitis, infectious and inflammatory diseases of the vagina (fungal, Trichomonas, nonspecific, viral, mixed infections) of acute and chronic course (treatment);
- Infectious and inflammatory complications before various gynecological interventions, including the installation and removal of an intrauterine device, abortion (artificial termination of pregnancy), diathermocoagulation of the cervix, hysterosalpingography (prevention).
Contraindications
- Adenoma (benign tumor) of the thyroid gland;
- Dühring's dermatitis herpetiformis;
- Thyrotoxicosis;
- Simultaneous treatment with radioactive iodine;
- Hypersensitivity to drug components.
Iodine oxide is not prescribed for newborns. Caution requires the use of the drug in chronic renal failure and lactating women. For pregnant women during the II-III trimesters, Iodoxide can be used in cases where the expected benefits to the health of the mother are higher than the possible risk to the fetus.
Instructions for the use of Iodoxide: method and dosage
Iodoxide should be injected deep into the vagina (preferably in the supine position).
The scheme of use is determined by the disease:
- Acute vaginitis: 2 times a day, 1 suppository, duration of therapy - 7 days;
- Subacute and chronic vaginitis: 1 suppository once a day (before bedtime), the duration of therapy is 14 days (during any phase of the menstrual cycle).
Side effects
During the use of Iodoxide, allergic reactions may develop, manifested in the form of hyperemia and itching.
Overdose
In acute iodine intoxication, hypernatremia, metabolic acidosis, circulatory failure, edema and irritation of the eyes, anuria and renal dysfunction, increased salivation, metallic taste in the mouth, pain or burning sensation in the mouth or pharynx, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders, laryngeal edema, accompanied by secondary asphyxia, pulmonary edema, skin reactions.
As a treatment for an overdose of Iodoxide, symptomatic therapy is prescribed and the function of vital organ systems (including the function of the thyroid and kidneys, as well as electrolyte balance) is maintained.
special instructions
The bactericidal effect of Iodoxide may be reduced in the presence of blood.
In case of non-manifest hyperthyroidism and other diseases of the thyroid gland (especially in elderly patients), the drug can be used only under strict indications and under continuous medical supervision.
