Pharmacological properties
As an active ingredient, Isla Mint lozenges contain an extract from Icelandic moss (Cetraria islandica), a medicinal plant which includes:
- lichen starch (glycans lichenin, isolichenin): has an enveloping, anti-inflammatory, antitussive effect; forms a protective film that protects the mucous membrane from inflammation and irritation;
- lichen (usnic) acid: has an antibacterial effect against streptococci, staphylococci, mycobacteria;
- tannins: astringent and bactericidal;
- polysaccharides: envelop the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract, protecting against the effects of negative external factors (increased dry air in residential or work premises, increased load on the vocal cords), and moisturizing them.
As a result of the studies, it was revealed that the effect of Isla Mint in catarrhal diseases of the respiratory tract is based mainly on the antimicrobial activity and the immunostimulating effect of the plant extract contained in the lozenges. Due to the protective properties of Icelandic moss, Isla Mint can also be used for prophylaxis, for example, with increased sensitivity of the airways or in case of increased load on them (including sports activities).
