Barium sulfate is a radiopaque contrast agent.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - powder for preparation of suspension for oral administration: white loose thin mass without taste and smell (50 g or 100 g in two-layer bags, in a cardboard box 1 bag; 100 g in a polymer cup, in a cardboard box 1 cup; for hospital - in a cardboard box of 60, 90 or 120 plastic cups or bags made of packaging paper with a polymer coating).
Active substance: barium sulfate.
Indications for use
The use of Barium sulfate is indicated for X-ray studies of the pharynx, esophagus, stomach and intestines, including the double contrast technique.
Contraindications
- suspicion or confirmed violation of the integrity of the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT);
- bleeding from the digestive tract;
- esophagotracheal fistulas;
- violation of the act of swallowing;
- esophageal stenosis;
- intestinal obstruction;
- malabsorption syndrome;
- food allergy;
- constipation;
- condition after surgery on the digestive tract;
- atresia;
- individual intolerance to the drug.
Not recommended for use during pregnancy.
Method of administration and dosage
Barium sulfate is for oral or rectal use.
The drug is used in the form of a suspension prepared immediately before the X-ray examination.
For oral administration, the suspension is prepared by gradually adding 100 ml of boiled or distilled water to 100 g of powder and thoroughly (including using a mixer) stirring for 4-5 minutes. For rectal administration, 1500 ml of water is added to 300 g of powder and injected into the rectum in an enema.
Recommended dosage for X-ray examination:
- pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines: inside - 50-100 ml (depending on the research method) for 1 dose;
- large intestine: rectally - 1000-1500 ml per study.
Side effects
Allergic reactions, constipation, and in rare cases - "barium" appendicitis may develop against the background of the use of the drug.
special instructions
Barium sulfate has low toxicity; it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not enter the systemic circulation. Complete excretion with feces occurs within the next 1-2 days.
It is allowed to use the drug during breastfeeding.
Drug interactions
No interaction of Barium sulfate with other drugs has been noted.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store in a dry place at any temperature. Keep out of the reach of children.
The shelf life is 5 years.
