St. John's wort is a popular medicinal plant widely used in traditional and folk medicine due to its complex chemical composition.
Pharmacological properties
St. John's wort herb has anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, antispasmodic, soothing, choleretic, astringent, hemostatic and tonic effect.
These properties of St. John's wort are due to the action of its active substances: flavones (pigments that color flowers in yellow), anthocyanins (pigments of the cell juice of fruits and flowers), essential oils, tannins and resinous substances, mineral salts, organic acids.
The correct use of St. John's wort allows you to activate digestion, regulate metabolic processes in the body, increase urine output (amount of urine), improve blood supply to internal organs, strengthen the gums, stimulate the activity of the heart, enhance the protective functions of the body and much more.
Indications for use
St. John's wort herb, the properties of which have caused a powerful therapeutic effect, is used for ulcers, gout, rheumatism, nervous diseases, depressive psychosis, colds, bedwetting, diseases of the cardiovascular system and digestive tract, kidney, gall bladder and liver diseases.
Also, St. John's wort, the use of which should be carried out only after consultation with a doctor, is effective in chronic tonsillitis, epilepsy, diffuse toxic goiter, oncological diseases, pulmonary and skin tuberculosis, elimination of round worms, diathesis, rashes, stomatitis.
St. John's wort serves as the basis for the preparation of herbal antibiotics such as imanin and novoimanin. These drugs are used for pharyngitis, sinusitis, rhinitis, mastitis, phlegmon, abscesses, purulent wounds and severe burns.
The use of this herb is also relevant in dental practice, where St. John's wort tincture is used to eliminate bad breath from the mouth and strengthen the gums.
Mode of application
From the Herb St. John's wort, you can prepare a tincture, a decoction, an extract, tea, oil.
St. John's wort tincture is prepared as follows: 1 tablespoon of chopped grass is poured into one glass of boiling water, let it brew for half an hour. It is recommended to take ¼ glass 3-4 times a day before meals.
For the broth, the same proportions of water and herbs are taken as for the tincture of St. John's wort, the resulting mixture is boiled for 15 minutes. The broth is cooled, filtered, divided into several portions and taken during the day.
St. John's wort oil is prepared from fresh flowers, 20 g of which are poured with 200 g of linseed or sunflower oil, infused for two weeks, shaking from time to time.
The obtained oil is used for external use for ulcers, wounds, abscesses, purulent inflammations, severe bruises, burns.
The extract (alcoholic tincture) of St. John's wort is prepared by insisting in a dark place for 10 days with a mixture of 4 tablespoons of herbs and 100 ml of alcohol. Then the alcohol tincture of St. John's wort is filtered and taken orally 3 times a day, while the maximum single dose is 50 drops. For external use, 30-40 drops are diluted in ½ glass of water.
Side effects
The use of St. John's wort in the recommended doses, as a rule, does not cause undesirable consequences. In rare cases, a feeling of fullness in the stomach, increased sensitivity to light, constipation, nausea, allergic reactions, headache, anxiety are possible.
Too strong tincture of St. John's wort can provoke pain and cramping in the intestines.
With prolonged use of St. John's wort, temporary impotence may occur, however, after the drug is discontinued, everything returns to normal after a few weeks. High concentrations of St. John's wort can damage reproductive cells.
Contraindications for use
St. John's wort herb is not prescribed for hypersensitivity to its active components, hypertension, since it increases blood pressure, as well as with the simultaneous use of antidepressants and some natural substances that can inhibit monoamine oxidase.
St. John's wort herb, contraindications of which are due to a slightly toxic effect, should not be used for a long time, as well as during pregnancy.

The decoction and tincture of St. John's wort can be stored for no more than two days in a cool place.
