Hawthorn is a plant from the Rosaceae family. It is widespread in the vastness of our Motherland. The hawthorn is primarily used in cardiology for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Hawthorns (and there are about 40 species of them in Russia) are medium-sized shrubs that can even be called small trees. A distinctive feature of this plant is the red or orange hawthorn fruits, for which one just wants to reach out, but sharp thorns, which are densely strewn with its stems, interfere with this. No wonder in Germany it is called "white thorn" (white - because of the color of the flowers of the plant).
The leaves of the hawthorn are green, with a darker top and a lighter bottom, with a bluish tint. The flowering period of the "white thorn" is from May to June. The most preferred places for growing are sunny hillsides, pine or deciduous forests, places along the fences. It is also used as a component of hedges.
Composition
As a medicinal plant material, flowers, leaves and fruits of hawthorn are used, which contain a whole scattering of useful substances: a number of flavonoids that are natural antioxidants (quercetin, vitexin, hyperoside), triterpene saponins, ursolic and oleanic acids, acetylcholine, caffeic acid.
In addition, hawthorn fruits contain: ascorbic, citric and tartaric acids, carotene, sugars, pectin substances, coumarins, from flavonoids - anthocyanins, hyperin, vitexin. Ripening, the fruits lose some of the ascorbic acid in favor of flavonoids.
Useful properties and application in medicine
Hawthorn has long been used with enviable success as a heart remedy. The use of hawthorn and the properties of this plant are determined by its chemical composition. The spectrum of cardiac diseases for which this medicinal plant is used is quite wide. It is used for functional disorders of cardiac activity, angioneuroses, in the initial phase of hypertension, with tachycardia, arrhythmias.
Hawthorn is also used for diseases of the central nervous system, lowering its excitability (this property of hawthorn is successfully used for insomnia). It should be noted that one should not expect any miraculous effect from a single intake of hawthorn: it should be used for a long time, if not constantly. Only in this case success is guaranteed.
The heart of an elderly person responds especially well to the reception of hawthorn, it literally gets stronger and revives. It is no secret that with age, the heart muscle undergoes a number of degenerative changes, including atherosclerotic changes in the coronary arteries feeding it, the blood flow in which sharply decreases. In this case, the ideal way out is the course use of hawthorn in the form of tea.
Another target group for hawthorn is people experiencing constant physical (to a lesser extent, emotional) overload, which leads to early wear and tear of the body and the manifestation of symptoms similar to the so-called "senile heart". In such situations, the use of hawthorn is justified not only for medicinal, but also for prophylactic purposes. Of course, you cannot cure coronary heart disease or heart failure with hawthorn alone (not to mention the later stages of these diseases), but in the very origins of heart problems, the use of hawthorn is seen as highly expedient and correct.
Postponed severe infectious diseases often negatively affect cardiac activity, which means there is another reason to seek help from hawthorn. It will help to optimize the function of the heart in case of arrhythmias, high blood pressure. Although it is not worth counting on hawthorn as the only remedy for hypertension: there have been cases when it even increased blood pressure.
Another wonderful property of hawthorn is rehabilitation. It helps to recover from myocardial infarction, that is, in cases where it is vital to restore coronary circulation, so that myocardiocytes again receive oxygen and nutrients in the required quantities.
A few words about the fruits of the hawthorn. They are powdery in consistency, have a sour taste. Can be used for food. Dry hawthorn flour gives homemade baked goods an original fruity flavor. Hawthorn fruits are also good as substitutes for coffee or tea. It would be appropriate to give a recipe for a decoction used for hypertension and cholecystitis, one of the components of which are hawthorn fruits. Stew in the oven and rub a kilogram of fruit through a sieve, then prepare an oatmeal broth (for this, 300 g of flakes are poured over 3 liters of water overnight, and in the morning they are brought to a boil), add hawthorn fruit puree to the cooled broth. The daily dose is one glass.
Recently, hawthorn tincture, sold through the pharmacy network, has become widespread. It relieves the excitability of the central nervous system, tones the myocardium, stimulates coronary blood flow, eliminates tachycardia and arrhythmia, lowers blood pressure and helps relieve shortness of breath. But this tincture can be successfully prepared by yourself. To do this, you need to take 10 g of leaves with flowers, then insist for 10 days in 100 ml of 70% alcohol (in extreme cases, ordinary vodka is also suitable), filter and pour into a dark glass bottle. The resulting product should be taken in the amount of 20-30 drops three times a day half an hour before meals. The duration of the course is 1 month.
In a word, without flowers and fruits of hawthorn it is difficult to imagine a home medicine cabinet for a person who is fond of herbal medicine. Recently, a number of sources have indicated the ability of hawthorn to reduce weight (when taken in the form of tea). This is due to its ability to remove excess fluid from the body. It is unlikely that one should expect a lasting effect from him when correcting body weight, but perhaps readers will be interested in the recipe for such a tea: two teaspoons of leaves with flowers (maybe some flowers) are poured with 250 ml of boiling water and infused for 20 minutes. Drink one mug 2-3 times a day. To give the drink a more pleasant taste, you can add sea buckthorn juice with sugar or honey to it.
