Release form and composition

• suspension for oral administration (mint): opaque viscous substance, color - from almost white to cream, with a characteristic smell of menthol (100, 150 or 300 ml in dark glass vials equipped with a lid with a first opening control);
• chewing tablets (mint, lemon): round, flat, with beveled edges, on one side there is a sword in a circle, on the other there is an inscription “G 250”; the color of the tablets is from almost white to cream, small inclusions are allowed; characteristic mint / lemon odor (mint tablets: 4, 6, 8 or 10 pieces in blisters, 1-4 blisters in a cardboard box; 16 or 20 pieces in polypropylene containers, 2 containers in a cardboard box; lemon tablets: each 8 pcs. In blisters, 1-4 blisters in a cardboard box).

Suspension composition (per 10 ml):

• active ingredients: sodium alginate - 0.5 g; sodium bicarbonate - 0.267 g; calcium carbonate - 0.16 g;
• auxiliary components: carbomer, sodium saccharinate, sodium hydroxide, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, peppermint oil, purified water.

Composition of tablets (for 1 pc.):

• active ingredients: sodium alginate - 0.25 g; sodium bicarbonate - 0.1335 g; calcium carbonate - 0.08 g;
• auxiliary components: mannitol, macrogol, magnesium stearate, aspartame, copovidone, potassium acesulfame, mint / lemon flavor.

Indications for use

Gaviscon is used for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn, sour belching, dyspepsia, a feeling of heaviness in the stomach that occurs after eating in pregnant women or with gastroesophageal reflux.

Contraindications

Gaviscon is contraindicated for use in children under 6 years of age (for suspension), children under 12 years of age (for tablets) and with increased individual sensitivity to any of the components.

Gaviscon tablets should not be taken for phenylketonuria.

Relative contraindications for Gaviscon tablets (conditions in which a doctor's consultation is required before taking the drug): hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis and urolithiasis with the formation of oxalates, congestive heart failure, renal dysfunction.

Method of administration and dosage

The Gaviscon suspension is taken orally after each meal and at night (before bedtime).

Recommended doses:

• adults and children over 12 years old: 10–20 ml per dose, maximum per day - 80 ml;
• children from 6 to 12 years old: 5-10 ml per dose, maximum per day - 40 ml.

Gaviscon tablets are taken orally, chewed thoroughly, after each meal and at night (before bedtime).

Recommended doses for adults and children over 12 years of age: 2-4 tablets up to 4 times a day.

No dose adjustment is required in patients with hepatic impairment.

In elderly patients, dose adjustment is not necessary.

Gaviscon should be taken with caution in kidney failure if a low-salt diet is required.

Side effects

• immune system: anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions, hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria);
• respiratory system: respiratory effects (bronchospasm).

The appearance of these side effects, their exacerbation or the presence of other side effects should be immediately reported to the doctor.

A sign of an overdose is bloating (symptomatic treatment is recommended).

If symptoms persist after a week of drug therapy, the patient should consult a doctor for advice to revise the treatment.

Gaviscon has no teratogenic, embryotoxic and mutagenic effects, so the drug can be taken by pregnant and lactating women.

The drug contains sodium: 10 ml of suspension - 141 mg (6.2 mmol), 4 tablets - 246 mg (10.8 mmol). This should be considered in patients with impaired renal function, congestive heart failure, on a diet with limited salt content.

1 tablet contains 320 mg of calcium carbonate, which should be taken into account in patients with nephrocalcinosis, hypercalcemia, urolithiasis with the formation of oxalates, being careful when taking Gaviscon.

Because the tablets contain aspartame, they should not be taken by patients with phenylketonuria.

Patients with diabetes mellitus can take Gaviscon tablets, since aspartame is used as a sweetener in them.

The drug does not affect the speed of psychomotor reactions and the ability to concentrate, required to perform potentially hazardous types of work, including driving.

Drug interactions

Blockers of histamine H ₂ -receptors, antibiotics of the tetracyclines group, digoxin, fluoroquinolone, iron salts, ketoconazole, antipsychotics, levothyroxine sodium, thyroid hormones, penicillamine, β-adrenergic blockers (metoprolol, atenolol, glucocorticosteroid) observe the interval when using Gaviscon at the same time as these drugs, since the calcium carbonate in its composition has a strong antacid activity.
