Betazone is an anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor and antipruritic drug; glucocorticosteroid for topical use.
Release form and composition
Betazone is available in the following forms:
- cream for external use: white or almost white, uniform consistency (in tubes of 15 g or 30 g, in a cardboard box one tube);
- eye drops, ear drops 0.1%: transparent liquid with a slightly yellowish tinge or colorless (in dark glass bottles with a dropper cap, 5 ml each, 1 bottle in a cardboard box).
Composition of 1 g of cream:
- active substance: betamethasone (in the form of micronized betamethasone valerate) - 1 mg;
- auxiliary components: white soft paraffin, sodium dihydrogen phosphate anhydrous, sodium hydroxide, polyethylene glycol stearate, chlorocresol, cetostearyl alcohol, mineral oil, concentrated phosphoric acid, purified water.
Composition of 1 ml drops:
- active substance: betamethasone sodium phosphate - 1 mg (in terms of dry matter);
- auxiliary components: water for injection, sodium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Trilon B), disubstituted sodium phosphate, sodium hydroxide (1 M solution), orthophosphoric acid up to pH 7.0–8.5.
Indications for use
Cream
Betazone is used to reduce inflammation in dermatoses that are sensitive to glucocorticosteroid therapy, namely:
- solar dermatitis;
- contact dermatitis;
- neurodermatitis;
- exfoliative dermatitis;
- intertriginous dermatitis;
- seborrheic dermatitis;
- radiation dermatitis;
- congestive dermatitis;
- psoriasis;
- atopic eczema;
- coin-like eczema;
- anogenital itching;
- senile itching.
Drops
For eye diseases, drops are used in the following cases:
- allergic blepharitis, keratoconjunctivitis, conjunctivitis, scleritis, etc.;
- sympathetic ophthalmia;
- severe inflammatory and allergic eye diseases (in acute and chronic forms);
- iritis, iridocyclitis (acute, chronic);
- inflammatory complications after surgery - treatment and prevention.
For ear diseases, drops are used in the following cases:
- eczematous otitis externa (chronic form);
- diseases of the skin of the external auditory canal caused by Lichen simplex (chronic form);
- seborrheic otitis externa;
- allergic otitis externa;
- infectious otitis media (excluding viral) - as an additional agent in therapy.
Contraindications
Cream
Betazone cream is contraindicated for use in patients with hypersensitivity to the main or auxiliary components.
Drops
- viral eye diseases in acute form, including superficial keratitis caused by Herpes simplex;
- glaucoma;
- thinning or defect of the cornea, epithelium, sclera;
- tuberculous eye damage;
- fungal lesions of the eyes and skin of the external auditory canal;
- viral ear diseases in acute form;
- violation of the integrity of the tympanic membrane (due to the possible development of ototoxicity);
- tuberculous ear damage;
- otitis media (chronic or history data);
- hypersensitivity to the active ingredient of the drug - betamethasone.
Caution is observed when prescribing to patients with renal, hepatic and heart failure, nephrolithiasis and high blood pressure.
Method of administration and dosage
Cream
The cream is applied to the affected surface with a thin layer. The frequency of application depends on the severity of the condition and ranges from 1 to 3 times a day. As a rule, 1-2 applications per day are enough to achieve a therapeutic effect.
The treated areas should not be covered with occlusive dressings, as local and systemic side effects of corticosteroids may increase.
Drops
In case of eye diseases, drops are instilled into the conjunctival sac: at the beginning of therapy - every hour or every two hours, 1-2 drops, then the frequency of application is gradually reduced depending on the achieved therapeutic effect.
In case of ear diseases, drops are instilled into the external auditory canal: 3-4 drops every 2-3 hours, then the frequency of application is gradually reduced depending on the achieved therapeutic effect.
Side effects
Cream
During the application of Betazone cream, the following undesirable phenomena may occur: irritation, burning sensation, dryness, itching on the skin, acne-like rashes, perioral dermatitis, skin maceration, skin atrophy, prickly heat, folliculitis, striae, allergic contact dermatitis, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation, secondary infection …
Drops
During the use of Betazone drops, the following undesirable effects may occur: increased intraocular pressure, development of a secondary infection caused by Herpes simplex, burning, itching, dermatitis of the eyelid skin, formation of posterior subcapsular cataract, suppression of adrenal function, perforation or thinning of the sclera, cornea.

Betasone cream is not intended for use in ophthalmic practice.
If signs of hypersensitivity or skin irritation appear, the drug should be discontinued and the patient should be appropriately treated.
For fungal or bacterial infections, appropriate antifungal or antibiotic therapy should be prescribed. If, in this case, the effect of treatment does not come quickly, corticosteroids should be withdrawn until signs of infection disappear.
With the use of Betasone on large areas of the body and / or long-term treatment, especially in children, the likelihood of systemic side effects of glucocorticosteroids increases, including suppression of the adrenal cortex.
For pregnant and lactating women, the drug can be prescribed only in cases where the expected benefit to the mother significantly outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child.
In children and adolescents under 18 years of age, the use of Betazone is undesirable, since there are no clinical data on the safety and effectiveness of the drug in this age group.
The drug does not affect the ability of patients to drive and perform other potentially hazardous work.
When using Betazone in the form of drops, it is necessary to regularly monitor the intraocular pressure and the state of the lens, since steroid glaucoma and cataracts may develop due to prolonged treatment. The longer the treatment, the higher the risk of these adverse events, therefore it is recommended to limit therapy to the shortest possible period - less than 5 days.
Contact lenses must be removed before instilling the drug and reinstalled no earlier than 15 minutes after the procedure.
Drug interactions
There is no information on drug interactions between Betazone and other drugs.
Terms and conditions of storage
Keep out of reach of children at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C.
Shelf life is 2 years.
