Alginatol is a topical hemostatic drug. It also has anti-inflammatory and reparative effects.
Release form and composition
The drug is available in the form of suppositories for rectal administration. Candles of the preparation are light gray in color, the appearance of plaque on the surface is allowed (in a blister strip of 5 pieces, in a cardboard box 2 packages and instructions for use of Alginatol).
1 candle contains 0.25 g of sodium alginate and base (witepsol) up to 1.28 g.

Pharmacodynamics
The active substance of Alginatol, sodium alginate, is a natural polysaccharide obtained from brown seaweed.
The agent has anti-inflammatory, hemostatic (stops bleeding) and reparative (helps to restore the rectal mucosa) action.
Other effects of the drug:
- Normalization of the peripheral blood picture (ESR, hemoglobin and leukocytes);
- Reducing signs of inflammation.
Indications for use
- Proctosigmoiditis;
- Colitis;
- Chronic hemorrhoids with bleeding;
- Anal fissures in children (at the stage of epithelialization);
- The early postoperative period after surgery on the rectum.
Data were obtained on the beneficial effect of the drug in acute intestinal infections (enteritis, enterocolitis) in children.
Alginatol can be used both as a part of complex treatment and as monotherapy.

The drug is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to its components.

Alginatol suppositories are intended for rectal administration. The suppository is freed from the contour packaging with scissors and is inserted shallowly into the rectum. It is desirable that the patient has spontaneous bowel movement or a cleansing enema performed before administration.
Adults are usually prescribed 2-3 candles per day.
In pediatric practice, the dosage is adjusted according to age:
- Children from 6 months to 1 year old - 1 suppository per day;
- Children from 1 to 4 years of age - 1 suppository 2 times a day;
- Children over 4 years old - 1 suppository 2-3 times a day.
The duration of the course of drug treatment is 7-14 days, depending on the severity of the disease.
