Ergocalciferol is a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypovitaminosis and vitamin deficiency D.

Pharmacological properties

Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) is involved in the regulation of phosphorus-calcium metabolism in the body. Under the action of the body's enzymes, it turns into active metabolites that can easily penetrate cells through membranes and bind to specific receptors in them. This interaction of Ergocalciferol with receptors activates the synthesis of calcium-binding protein, as well as collagen, alkaline phosphatase enzyme, etc. The absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine into the blood is facilitated, their movement to various organs, and, above all, to bone tissue, is accelerated.

Vitamin D2 stimulates the growth of cartilage tissue in the growth zones of bones, and in the kidneys it enhances the reabsorption of calcium, phosphates, amino acids. According to the mechanism of action, Ergocalciferol is an antagonist of parathyroid hormone of the parathyroid gland.

Ergocalciferol is absorbed from the digestive tract in the distal part of the small intestine, the degree of absorption depends on the level of its deficiency in the body, amounting to 60 - 90%, and bile enhances absorption. It is converted into active metabolites in the liver and kidneys; it remains in the adipose tissue for the longest time in the body. Excretion from the body is carried out through the intestines.

Release form

The drug is produced in pills, oil and alcohol solution for internal use, in drops for oral administration.

Indications for the use of Ergocalciferol

Inside Ergocalciferol is used for the prevention and treatment of calcium and phosphorus deficiency in the body in conditions such as rickets and rickets-like diseases, osteoporosis, softening of bone tissue, impaired absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine, with a lack of sunlight in the Far North, alcoholism, during pregnancy and lactation, with hypoparathyroidism, pseudohypoparathyroidism, tetany.

Externally, vitamin D2 is used to treat dermatitis with dry skin, diaper dermatitis, mild burns, minor wounds and cuts, abrasions, to prevent the formation and treatment of nipple cracks in breastfeeding women.

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Ergocalciferol is not used in case of vitamin D2 intolerance, excess calcium and phosphorus in the body, and renal osteodystrophy. Carefully under the supervision of a doctor, it is used for active pulmonary tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, in the elderly, during pregnancy in women over the age of 35, during breastfeeding, the formation of phosphate stones in the case of urolithiasis, chronic renal and heart failure.

Instructions for the use of Ergocalciferol

For internal use, the dose is selected individually, depending on the severity of the disease and taking into account the amount of vitamin that comes with food. It is advisable to mix the drug in a spoon with a small amount of water before use.

To prevent the development of rickets in children, its prevention is carried out by prescribing Ergocalciferol to women, starting from 30 weeks of pregnancy, in the autumn-winter period. The dose is 400 - 500 IU per day daily.

In full-term children, for the purpose of prophylaxis, Ergocalciferol is given according to the instructions in the autumn-winter period, starting from the age of 3-4 weeks, at a dose of 400-500 IU / day for the first 2 years of life. The drug is not indicated during the summer months. For premature babies, as well as in unfavorable conditions and with a low degree of insolation, prophylactic intake begins at 2 weeks of age, at a dose of 1000 IU / day. This technique is called the "fractional dose" method.

For children who are bottle-fed with adapted formulas, when calculating the daily dose of Ergocalciferol, its content in the mixture should be taken into account, and the dosage of the drug should be properly reduced.

To prevent rickets by the method of "vitamin shocks", Ergocalciferol is given in a dose of 20-30 thousand IU 2 times a week for 6 to 8 weeks in a row.

For certain categories of children - from socially disadvantaged families or closed institutions, in the northern regions of residence, in the presence of risk factors for the development of rickets against the background of concomitant diseases, for its prevention it is more convenient to use the "compacted method" when the daily dose of Ergocalciferol is 10-15 thousand IU per day 20 days in a row.

For the treatment of rickets, the dose of Ergocalciferol is higher. At grade 1 of rickets, full-term children are recommended to take vitamin D2 from 10 to 15 thousand IU / day, at grade 2 - the total course dose is 600 - 800 thousand IU, at stage 3 700 - 800 thousand IU per course. The duration of admission depends on the severity of the course - in the acute course, the course dose is distributed over 10 - 15 days, with subacute for 30 - 45 days of admission.

In the case of osteomalacia and osteoporosis, Ergocalciferol is taken at 3000 IU every day for 1.5 months, women during menopause need 400-800 IU / day along with calcium supplements. With pathology of the parathyroid glands, the dose of Ergocalciferol can reach up to 1 million IU per day.

When treating with this agent, in order to prevent its possible once every 7 days, it is necessary to determine the calcium content in urine using the Sulkovich test.

Vitamin D2 must be stored in a tightly closed container in a dark place so that its medicinal properties do not lose their potency. This fat-soluble drug can accumulate in the body.

When it is required to take large doses of Ergocalciferol, it is optimal to take a complex of vitamins A, B and C with it. For a greater effect in premature babies, simultaneous intake of phosphates is required.

For external use, Ergocalciferol is applied to clean skin 2 times a day, the duration of application depends on the dynamics of the disease.

Side effects of Ergocalciferol

According to the instructions, Ergocalciferol can cause headaches, weakness, nausea, increased irritability, frequent urination, weight loss, tissue calcification, and very rarely - heart rhythm disturbances.
