Broxinac is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) for topical use in ophthalmic practice.
Release form and composition
Broxinac is available in the form of eye drops: a clear greenish-yellow solution (1.7 ml in vials, one vial in a cardboard box).
Composition for 1 ml drops:
- active substance: sodium bromfenac sesquihydrate - 0.9 mg;
- auxiliary components: boric acid, polysorbate 80, sodium borate decahydrate, benzalkonium chloride, sodium sulfite anhydrous, povidone K-30, sodium hydroxide (until pH 8.3), disodium edetate dihydrate, water for injection.
Indications for use
Broxinac drops are used to relieve pain and treat postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- children and adolescents under 18 years of age (the effectiveness and safety of the drug in children and adolescents have not been studied);
- increased attacks of urticaria, bronchial asthma and symptoms of acute rhinitis when using acetylsalicylic acid and other NSAIDs;
- hypersensitivity to the components of the drug and other NSAIDs.
Relative (Broxinac is used with caution):
- a history of bleeding;
- bronchial asthma;
- a history of allergic reactions;
- a history of hypersensitivity to acetylsalicylic acid and phenylacetyl acid derivatives;
- simultaneous use with drugs that increase blood clotting time;
- diabetes;
- rheumatoid arthritis;
- defects of the corneal epithelium;
- denervation of the cornea;
- superficial eye diseases;
- complications after ophthalmic surgery;
- repeated surgical interventions carried out within a short period of time.
Method of administration and dosage
Broxinac is applied topically by instillation into the conjunctival sac.
The recommended dose is 1 drop once a day. Treatment should begin one day before surgery and continue for 14 days after surgery, including the day of surgery.
In case of missing the next instillation, the patient should apply the drug in the recommended dose as soon as he remembers about missing an appointment. If about 24 hours have passed from missing the next dose, Broxinac should be instilled at the next scheduled time. Do not double the dose to compensate for the missed dose.
In elderly patients (65 years and older), dose adjustment is not required.
Side effects
Side effects observed with a single use of the drug Broxinac:
- nervous system: headache;
- organ of vision: often - itching, burning and pain in the eyes, irritation and redness of the eyes, inflammation of the iris, unusual sensations and a feeling of discomfort in the eyes, hyperemia of the conjunctiva; very rarely - thinning, erosion or perforation of the cornea, destruction of the epithelium.
Side effects observed with double use of the drug Broxinac:
- respiratory system: cough, asthma, nosebleeds, nasal discharge;
- organ of vision: sometimes - photophobia, decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, exudates in the fundus, retinal hemorrhage, bleeding from the vessels of the eyelids; rarely - corneal ulcer;
- general disorders: facial edema.
special instructions
When using local NSAIDs one day before eye surgery and within 14 days after ophthalmic surgery, the risk of developing and the severity of side effects from the cornea may increase.
Topical NSAIDs can lead to keratitis.
If there are signs of rupture of the corneal epithelium, the use of Broxinac should be stopped immediately, after which the patient should be under the supervision of a specialist until the state of the cornea of the eye is normalized.
NSAIDs can delay healing, especially when used topically with corticosteroids.
Do not use contact lenses during treatment with Broxinac.
To avoid contamination of the contents of the vial, the patient should not touch the tip of the dropper vial or touch any surface with it.
Broksinak practically does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and other potentially dangerous mechanisms. In the case of a short-term blurred vision after instilling the drug, it is necessary to wait for the full restoration of vision before starting work that requires increased concentration.
Drug interactions
Broxinac can be used simultaneously with mydriatics, β-blockers, α-adrenomimetics and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, however, the interval between instillation of ophthalmic drugs should be at least 5 minutes.

The shelf life of the drug is 2 years.
The opened bottle must be used within 16 days.
