Azona is a synthetic drug used to treat various forms of depression.

Release form and composition

The drug is produced in the form of capsules for oral administration with an active substance - trazodone. 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg each.

Indications for use

Azona has antidepressant and sedative (calming) effects. Taking the drug helps to increase the depth and duration of sleep in depressive conditions and reduces the pathological craving for alcohol. It can be used in the treatment of withdrawal symptoms, as it eliminates anxiety and sleep disorders in the acute period.

Azona is not addictive and is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The effect of the treatment is noted after 4-10 days from the start of admission.

According to the instructions, Azona is used for various forms of depression - endogenous, neurotic, psychotic, somatogenic. The medicine is effective when the patient has 4 of the following symptoms:

  • Sleep disturbance;
  • Decreased interest in the outside world;
  • Lethargy;
  • Loss of appetite or bulimia;
  • Slow down thinking;
  • Impaired concentration of attention;
  • Decreased sexual activity;
  • Anxiety, phobias;
  • Obsessive guilt;
  • Suicidal thoughts.

Also indications for the use of the drug Azona are acute withdrawal symptoms in alcoholism and benzodiazepine drug dependence. In some cases, it is possible to use this medication to prevent migraine attacks.

Contraindications

The use of Azona is contraindicated in pregnant women, as well as in women during lactation. The drug cannot be used in patients with hypersensitivity to trazodone, ventricular arrhythmia, tachycardia, a history of priapism, as well as in acute myocardial infarction.

According to the instructions, Azona should be used with caution in patients under the age of 18 years, with heart disease, arterial hypertension (since an additional hypotensive effect is possible), with renal or hepatic insufficiency.

Method of administration and dosage

For the treatment of mild depressive conditions, the dosage of the drug is 150-200 mg per day, divided into 3 doses, while most of the dose is recommended to be taken in the evening (before bedtime). In moderate to severe forms of depression, the dosage can be increased to 300 mg per day, up to a maximum of 600 mg (usually with inpatient treatment).

Side effects

The use of Azona may be accompanied by some side effects from the central nervous system, usually manifested in the form of drowsiness, dizziness, headache, agitation, disorientation, myalgia, impaired coordination of movements, insomnia, increased fatigue, tremor, disorientation and darkening of consciousness.

Violations of the cardiovascular system can manifest itself as arrhythmia, bradycardia, orthostatic hypotension, conduction disturbances, ventricular fibrillation, decreased blood pressure, and fainting.

Also Azona can cause:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dryness and bitterness in the mouth;
  • Visual impairment and eye irritation;
  • Nasal congestion;

The use of Azona changes the effect of warfarin, enhances the effects of barbiturates and alcohol. The medication has a hypotensive effect, therefore, if the patient is taking antihypertensive drugs, the dosage of the latter must be adjusted. Azona is able to increase the concentration of digoxin in the blood plasma.

Reception of Azona requires monitoring by a clinical blood test, since a decrease in the total number of leukocytes is possible.

The drug is not contraindicated in prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma. Treatment of elderly patients should be carried out with blood pressure control.

Men undergoing therapy should be warned that in case of inadequate erections, it is necessary to urgently consult a doctor.

During treatment with Azone, care should be taken when driving a car and other activities that require increased concentration.
