Furagin is a synthetic antimicrobial agent.

Furagin belongs to the group of nitrofuran antimicrobial agents. The active substance of the drug is furazidine. Its mechanism of action is based on inhibition of the formation of nucleic acids in bacteria, which makes it impossible for their reproduction. The outer shell of bacteria and their cytoplasmic membranes are destroyed.

In addition, the most important biochemical cycles (including the respiratory chain and the tricarboxylic acid cycle) are suppressed in microorganisms, and this disrupts their vital activity, as a result of which bacteria begin to secrete less waste products and toxins. This leads to an improvement in the condition of patients even before the death of pathogens.

The main action of Furagin according to the instructions is bacteriostatic, the achievement of bactericidal concentrations is possible at a dosage 2 times higher than the bacteriostatic. It is the bactericidal concentration of the agent that is achieved in the urine when the drug is excreted from the body.

Furagin is active against gram-positive (staphylococci, streptococci) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella). The use of Furagin is ineffective in cases where the causative agents of infection are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, enterococci, Proteus, serrations and some other microorganisms.

This drug is able to activate the immune system. Furagin increases the content of nonspecific protective proteins (complement) in the blood and enhances the ability of leukocytes to destroy pathogenic bacteria. Furagin, according to the instructions, is released in tablets and capsules of 50 mg, as well as in the form of a soluble powder in cans of 100 g.

Indications

The drug is used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, acute and recurrent chronic (cystitis, pyelonephritis, urethritis, infections of the female genital organs). It is suitable for children and for long-term bladder catheterization in adults.

According to reviews, Furagin in the form of a solution for external use is effective in the treatment of keratitis, conjunctivitis, burns, and for washing purulent wounds. As a means of preventing infections, it is used for diagnostic (cystoscopy) and surgical manipulations in urology, for washing cavities with pleural empyema, peritonitis.

The drug acts only on microorganisms that are sensitive to it.

Contraindications

Despite the available indications for Furagin, if the sensitivity to it is increased, as well as if the patient has concomitant severe renal failure, this remedy cannot be used. Do not use it in children under 1 year old, pregnant and lactating women.

Caution requires the use of the drug for diseases of the liver, nervous system, as well as local use in children under 1 month.

Instructions for the use of Furagin

Tablets and capsules are taken after meals with plenty of water. Adults are prescribed an average of 50-100 mg 3 times a day, the course is 7-14 days, after which a break of 10-15 days is required. If necessary, the course can be repeated after a break.

For children, the dose of Furagin must be calculated on body weight - 5-7 mg / kg / day in 3 divided doses, the duration of the course is the same.

To prepare an aqueous 0.5% or 1% solution for topical application, 0.5 g or 1 g, respectively, are dissolved in 100 ml of hot water for injection. Then the resulting solution must be filtered through special antibacterial filters, poured into glass bottles and sterilized. Such a solution is used in ophthalmology at a dilution of 1: 13000 (2 drops are instilled into the eyes after 4-6 hours), as well as for washing cavities.

At home, for the local treatment of purulent wounds, burns, you can prepare a 1% Furagin solution in 0.9% NaCl solution.
