Release form and composition
Dosage form - tablets for the preparation of a solution for topical use: flat-cylindrical, round, from brown to dark brown or almost black with a bluish tint, with an uneven surface color, with a notch and a bevel (in a cardboard box, 1 contoured cell package containing 1 or 2 tablets, 1 dark glass bottle, 1 pipette cap and instructions for use of Protargol-ENT).
Composition of 1 tablet:
- active substance: protargol (silver proteinate) - 200 mg;
- auxiliary component: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose - 10 mg.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
When entering the body, silver proteinate dissociates to form silver ions, which have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent properties. By binding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of bacteria, silver ions actively suppress the multiplication of infectious agents.
The main mechanism of action of silver ions is based on their ability to form a protective film and deposit proteins on damaged mucous membranes. In this case, the inflammatory process is suppressed, the blood vessels are narrowed (which leads to a decrease in edema), and the sensitivity decreases. Also, silver ions inhibit the growth of various bacteria.
Protargol-ENT is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including:
- Staphylococcus aureus;
- candida albicans;
- wax bacillus;
- aspergillus black;
- colibacillus;
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa;
- salmonella enteric.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, silver proteinate is practically not absorbed.
Indications for use
Protargol-ENT is prescribed for the symptomatic treatment of sinusitis and acute nasopharyngitis (rhinitis).
Contraindications
- atrophic rhinitis;
- pregnancy;
- period of breastfeeding;
- children under 3 years old;
- individual intolerance to the components of Protargol-ENT.
Protargol-ENT, instructions for use: method and dosage
The 2% solution obtained from the Protargol-ENT tablet is applied topically.
To prepare a solution, 1 tablet is placed in the bottle attached to the kit, after which 10 ml of boiled water or water for injection, pre-cooled to room temperature, is poured into it. The bottle is closed with a pipette cap and vigorously shaken for 5 minutes. After that, the drug is left for 10 minutes, and then again vigorously shaken for 5 minutes. It is important that the tablet is completely dissolved.
In finished form, the solution can be stored for 30 days in a dark place at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C.
Immediately before instilling the solution, it is recommended to clean and rinse the nasal passages.
Recommended dosage regimen depending on the patient's age:
- children aged 3 to 6 years: 1-2 drops 3 times a day in each nostril for 5-7 days;
- children over 6 years old and adults: 2-3 drops, 3 times a day in each nostril.
After 2-3 days after the first use of the drug, its main effect begins to manifest itself.
If after 5-7 days from the moment of application of Protargol-ENT, the manifestations of pathology persist or worsen, it is important to consult a doctor.
Side effects
During the period of therapy with Protargol-ENT, the following undesirable phenomena may develop:
- atopic dermatitis;
- allergic reactions: urticaria, mucosal irritation, skin itching;
- Quincke's edema;
- anaphylactic shock;
- redness of the eyes;
- dry mouth;
- feeling of numbness and burning.
In cases of aggravation of side effects, you should discontinue the drug and consult a doctor for advice.
Overdose
With the recommended method of using Protargol-ENT tablets, an overdose is unlikely.
The main symptoms: the possible increase in undesirable phenomena. If you accidentally swallow a large amount of the solution, irritation of the gastrointestinal tract may occur. Long-term uncontrolled use of the drug can theoretically serve the development of argyrosis, a very rare pathology in which the skin and mucous membranes are stained bluish or gray. The likelihood of argyrosis is unlikely if the recommended dosage regimen is followed.
Therapy: symptomatic treatment. In cases of severe irritation, burning and itching of the eyes, rinse the skin and mucous membranes with plenty of water for 15 minutes.

When the drug is combined with salts of aluminum, iron, mercury, silver, lead, copper or zinc, insoluble precipitates are formed.
Organic bases (epinephrine) and alkaloid salts inactivate the silver proteinate solution.
When using these or other drugs, including over-the-counter drugs, it is recommended to consult a doctor before starting therapy with Protargol-ENT.
