Latin name: Sulfalen
ATX code: J01ED02
Active ingredient: sulfalene (Sulfalene)
Producer: Obolenskoe - pharmaceutical company, CJSC (Russia)
Description and photo update: 2019-26-08
Sulfalene is a drug that has antibacterial, bacteriostatic and antimicrobial effects.
Release form and composition
Sulfalena dosage form - tablets: color - white or white with a yellowish tinge, shape - flat-cylindrical (10 pcs. In blister and non-cell contour packages, 1–5 packages in a cardboard box).
Composition of 1 tablet:
- active substance: sulfalene - 200 mg;
- additional components: magnesium stearate, potato starch, polyvinylpyrrolidone.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Sulfalene has a bacteriostatic effect, has antimicrobial activity.
The main effect of the substance is to block the utilization of para-aminobenzoic acid by microorganisms and the synthesis of folate, due to which the reproduction of gram-positive / gram-negative microorganisms (including anaerobes, streptococci, pneumococci, staphylococci) is inhibited.
Sulfalene has no effect on bacterial strains showing resistance to sulfonamides.
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration, sulfalene is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
C max (maximum concentration) in the blood is reached in 4-6 hours. The substance binds to plasma proteins to a lesser extent than other ultra-long-term and long-acting sulfonamides. This provides a high concentration of free active sulfalene in the blood.
It penetrates well into tissues and body fluids. It is found in bile in high concentrations. It circulates in the blood for a long time. The half-life is on average 65 hours. 60% of the dose is eliminated in 9 days. Slow excretion is associated with intense reabsorption in the renal tubules. It is excreted mainly in the urine as metabolites.

In the presence of liver disease, therapy is carried out with caution (under the supervision of urine / blood tests).
Drug interactions
With the combined use of Sulfalena with certain drugs / substances, the following effects may develop:
- methotrexate and other folic acid antagonists: the likelihood of folic acid deficiency increases;
- phenytoin (in the treatment of epilepsy): the likelihood of toxic reactions increases;
- diaminopyrimidine derivatives (tetroxoprim, trimethoprim, pyrimethamine): the effectiveness of sulfalene is enhanced;
- methoxalen (in the treatment of psoriasis): the likelihood of photosensitization increases;
- hexamethylenetetramine or drugs that increase the formation of uric acid (ammonium chloride): the likelihood of insoluble compounds in the renal pelvis in the form of calculi increases.
Analogs
The analogues of Sulfalene are: Sulfalene-HC, Sulfadimethoxin, Kelfizin, Sulfalene-meglumine, Sulfapyridazine, Sulfadimethoxin, etc.
