Xymelin Extra is a local combined drug with a vasoconstrictor effect used in ENT practice.

Release form and composition

The dosage form of Xymelin Extra is a nasal spray: transparent, colorless or somewhat colored (in a cardboard box - 1 plastic bottle with a pump dispensing device of 10 ml).

Active substances in 1 spray dose:

  • xylometazoline hydrochloride - 0.07 mg;
  • ipratropium bromide monohydrate - 0.084 mg.

Auxiliary components: disodium edetate dihydrate - 0.07 mg; 85% glycerol - 3.91 mg; concentrated hydrochloric acid - up to pH 4.5; sodium hydroxide - to pH; purified water - up to 0.14 ml.

Pharmacological properties

Xymelin Extra is one of the topical combined preparations used in ENT practice.

The main properties of the components:

  • xylometazoline: is an alpha-adrenergic agonist. It leads to narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, which helps to eliminate edema and hyperemia of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. With rhinitis, it facilitates nasal breathing;
  • ipratropium bromide: has anticholinergic properties. When used intranasally, it helps to reduce the secretion of the glands of the nasal mucosa.

When using the drug in therapeutic doses, the mucous membrane is not irritated and hyperemia does not occur.

The action of Xymelin Extra develops in 5-10 minutes, its duration is 6-8 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

With intranasal administration, the active components of Xymelin Extra are absorbed little, their plasma concentration is negligible.

Indications for use

  • swelling and hyperemia of the nasal cavity (symptomatic therapy);
  • acute respiratory diseases with symptoms of rhinitis;
  • sinusitis;
  • hay fever;
  • acute allergic rhinitis.

Contraindications

Absolute:

  • atrophic rhinitis;
  • arterial hypertension;
  • burdened history of surgical interventions on the meninges;
  • thyrotoxicosis;
  • tachycardia;
  • glaucoma;
  • severe atherosclerosis;
  • age up to 18 years;
  • I trimester of pregnancy;
  • individual intolerance to the components of the drug.

  • cystic fibrosis;
  • hyperplasia of the prostate;
  • diabetes;
  • obstruction of the bladder neck;
  • angina pectoris III – IV functional class;

  • II – III trimesters of pregnancy and lactation.

Instructions for use of Xymelin Extra: method and dosage

Xymelin Extra is used intranasally.

Recommended regimen of drug use: 3 times a day, 1 injection into each nasal passage for up to 10 days. Long-term use is decided by the doctor.

Side effects

Possible side reactions with frequent / prolonged use: dryness / irritation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, nosebleeds, sneezing, burning and tingling in the throat and nose, headache, swelling of the nasal mucosa, hypersecretion of the glands of the nasal mucosa.

In rare cases, the development of the following disorders is noted: insomnia, headache, systemic allergic reactions, dizziness, visual impairment, tachycardia, palpitations, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure.

Overdose

The appearance of an acute overdose after intranasal use of Xymelin Extra is unlikely, since the absorption of its active substances is extremely insignificant.

The main symptoms are manifested in the form of xerostomia, accommodation disorders, tachycardia, headache, and arterial hypertension.

Therapy: symptomatic. Cancellation of the drug is shown.

Before using Xymelin Extra, the nasal passages must be cleaned.

Long-term therapy, for example for chronic rhinitis, is not recommended.
