Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Genferon Light is a combined drug, the action of which is due to the active substances that make up its composition. Has a systemic and local effect.
Human recombinant interferon alpha-2b, which is part of Genferon Light, is produced by a strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli, into which the human interferon alpha-2b gene is genetically engineered. It has the following effects:
- antiproliferative and immunomodulatory: manifests itself primarily as an increase in the cell-mediated responses of the immune system, which leads to an increase in the effectiveness of the immune response against intracellular parasites, viruses and cells that have undergone tumor transformation. This is due to the activation of CD8 + T-killers, NK cells, increased differentiation of B-lymphocytes and the production of antibodies by them, activation of phagocytosis and the monocyte-macrophage system, as well as an increase in the expression of molecules of the main histocompatibility complex type I, which increases the likelihood of recognition of infected cells by immune cells. systems;
- antiviral: mediated by the activation of a number of intracellular enzymes that inhibit viral replication;
- antibacterial: mediated by reactions of the immune system, which are enhanced by the influence of interferon.
The second active component, taurine, is a strong antioxidant, has an immunomodulatory and membrane stabilizing effect, helps to normalize metabolic processes and tissue regeneration, preserve the biological activity of interferon, thereby enhancing the therapeutic effect of Genferon Light. Taurine directly interacts with reactive oxygen species, the excessive accumulation of which leads to the appearance of pathological processes.
Pharmacokinetics
Suppositories
- rectal administration: high bioavailability (more than 80%) of interferon. Thanks to this, a local and pronounced systemic immunomodulatory effect is achieved;
- intravaginal application: a pronounced local antiviral, antibacterial and antiproliferative effect is provided due to the high concentration of the substance in the focus of infection and its fixation on the cells of the mucous membrane. The systemic effect is insignificant, due to the low absorption capacity of the vaginal mucosa.
The maximum serum concentration of interferon in the blood is reached 5 hours after drug administration. The main route of elimination of α-interferon is renal catabolism.
The half-life is 12 hours, which necessitates the use of Genferon Light 2 times a day.
Drops, spray
Genferon Light, when applied intranasally, creates a high concentration of interferon in the focus of infection, produces a pronounced local immunostimulating and antiviral effect.
Systemic absorption is negligible; interferon, when administered intranasally in a small amount, is determined in the blood and lung tissue. Biotransformation in the body occurs mainly in the kidneys with a half-life of 5.1 hours.
A small amount of the drug, when it enters the systemic circulation, has a systemic immunomodulatory effect.
