Bronchoton is a combined antitussive agent with a bronchodilatory effect.
Release form and composition
Dosage form - syrup: liquid with a characteristic odor, yellowish-brown color (125 g each in polyethylene terephthalate or dark glass bottles, 1 bottle in a cardboard box and instructions for using Bronchoton).
5 g of syrup contains:
- active ingredients: glaucine hydrobromide - 0.005 g, ephedrine hydrochloride - 0.004 g, common basil oil - 0.005 g;
- auxiliary components: tween 80, sucrose, ethanol 96%, nipagin (sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate), nipazole (sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate), citric acid, water.

Pharmacodynamics
Bronchoton is a combined herbal preparation that has a bronchodilating and antitussive effect.
The effect of Bronchoton is determined by the properties of its active ingredients:
- glaucine: has a suppressive effect on the cough center, while not leading to respiratory depression, drug dependence and the development of constipation;
- ephedrine: stimulating effect on the respiratory center, eliminates edema of the bronchial mucosa and expands the bronchi;
- basil oil: has mild sedative properties, has antispasmodic and antimicrobial effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Ephedrine hydrochloride and glaucine hydrobromide are well absorbed in the digestive tract, thus creating and maintaining the necessary therapeutic levels in the blood plasma. Excretion is carried out mainly in the urine.
Indications for use
The use of Bronchoton is indicated for diseases of the respiratory system occurring with dry cough (as part of complex therapy):
- bronchial asthma;
- acute or chronic form of bronchitis and tracheobronchitis;
- whooping cough;
- bronchoconstriction.
Contraindications
- heart failure;
- cardiac ischemia;
- arrhythmias;
- arterial hypertension;
- coronary atherosclerosis;
- thyrotoxicosis;
- pheochromocytoma;
- hyperthyroidism;
- diabetes;
- deficiency of sucrase-isomaltase, fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome;
- insomnia;
- angle-closure glaucoma;
- hypertrophy of the prostate;
- the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- age up to 3 years;
- elective surgery using general anesthesia with cyclopropane or halothane;
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
With caution, Bronchoton syrup is recommended to be taken for liver and brain diseases, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, alcoholism, patients prone to the development of drug dependence, children.
Bronchoton, instructions for use: method and dosage
Syrup Bronchoton is taken orally.
Recommended dosage regimen:
- adults: 1 tablespoon 3-4 times a day;
- children over 10 years old: 2 teaspoons 3 times a day;
- children 3-10 years old: 1 teaspoon 3 times a day.
The duration of the drug intake is 5-7 days.
Side effects
- cardiovascular system: extrasystole, tachycardia, increased blood pressure (BP);
- digestive system: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation;
- nervous system: insomnia, tremors, agitation, dizziness;
- urinary system: difficulty urinating; in patients with prostatic hyperplasia - urinary retention;
- endocrine system: dysmenorrhea, increased libido;
- allergic reactions: urticaria rash, urticaria, bronchospasm;
- dermatological reactions: rash, increased sweating;
- others: tachyphylaxis, visual impairment; in children, drowsiness.
Overdose
The main symptoms are: difficulty urinating, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, poor circulation, tremors of the limbs, sweating.
Therapy: gastric lavage, intake of activated carbon, if necessary - symptomatic treatment.
special instructions
The stimulating effect of the drug on the central nervous system (CNS) can cause sleep disturbances, therefore, it is not recommended to take the syrup after 16 hours.
In the absence of clinical effect or aggravation of the symptoms of the disease after 5-7 days of therapy, you should consult a doctor.
5 ml of syrup (1 teaspoon) contains up to 0.069 g of ethanol.
Due to the presence of ephedrine in Bronchoton, doping tests in athletes can give a positive result.
In rare cases, urticaria or immediate hypersensitivity reactions with bronchospasm and urticarial rash may occur. The reason for their appearance may be the auxiliary substances of the drug - methyl parahydroxybenzoate and propyl parahydroxybenzoate.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
During the period of syrup application, the patient is advised to avoid potentially hazardous activities, including driving.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Bronchoton is not prescribed during pregnancy / lactation.
Pediatric use
- up to 3 years: Bronchoton therapy is contraindicated;
- 3-18 years: use the drug with caution.
For violations of liver function
Patients with liver disease should be treated under medical supervision.
Drug interactions
The syrup can be prescribed as part of a combination therapy with antipyretic and antibacterial agents, vitamins.
With the simultaneous use of Bronchoton:
- monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors cause headache, increase the risk of arrhythmias, cerebral hemorrhages, hypertensive crisis, therefore, you can take the syrup only 14 days after the MAO inhibitors are discontinued;
- hypnotics and narcotic drugs weaken their effect;
- sympatholytics reduce the hypotensive effect against the background of the sympathomimetic action of ephedrine;
- non-selective beta-blockers reduce their antihypertensive effect and bronchodilator effect of the drug;
- tricyclic antidepressants, cardiac glycosides, quinidine, some sympathomimetics may increase the risk of arrhythmias;
- dexamethasone reduces its therapeutic effect;
- oral hypoglycemic agents and insulin can reduce hypoglycemic activity;
- CNS-stimulating drugs and tonic drinks, including tea, coffee, coca-cola, can increase the stimulating effect of the drug on the nervous system.
During the treatment period, expectorants (N-acetylcysteine, ambroxol, bromhexine), urine alkalizing drugs (sodium bicarbonate) should not be used.
Due to the risk of side effects, it is recommended with caution to combine syrup with medicines containing ergot alkaloids and oxytocin.
