A muscle strain is an injury to the ligamentous-muscular system caused by excessive straining. Most often, this problem occurs during intense physical work and sports, when the movements are too fast and active. An important role in the mechanism of injury is played by the unpreparedness of muscles for intensive work.

Muscle injury symptoms

Muscle sprains cause severe pain. You may feel like something is ripping or bursting in the muscle area. Further, it becomes impossible or very painful to move in the injured limb or neck, back. In the next few minutes after stretching the muscles in the area of injury, swelling, hemorrhage occurs. These phenomena are associated with vascular rupture. Sprains of the thigh and back muscles are the most common injuries in this type of injury. Stretching the muscles of the back is usually associated with heavy lifting, especially if the movements are very sharp. You can injure your back muscles in the gym, or at your summer cottage or when you move. If an injury has occurred, then movement in the spine is limited by severe pain, it is often difficult to turn the torso and neck. Stretching of the thigh muscles is especially common during sports and in winter, when sudden movements with loss of balance are associated with ice. This injury can severely restrict walking. In order to exclude damage to bone tissue, an x-ray examination is sometimes required.

Treating a muscle strain is a lengthy process that lasts from one week to one and a half months. It is important to provide assistance to the victim immediately after an injury. Restrict movement in the area of injured muscles for 48 hours. When stretching the muscles of the back for two days, you can not lift weights, make turns and bends. If there is a stretching of the muscles of the thigh, lower leg, then the patient must relieve the limb - for example, stay in bed or move with the help of crutches.

A cold compress or ice should be applied to the area of the body where a tumor appears after an injury, hemorrhage. First, a cloth is placed on the skin, and then ice packs or any cold objects (frozen foods, food ice cubes, etc. are suitable). For the first two days, it is recommended to reapply ice to the stretched muscle every three to four hours for 20 minutes. A pressure bandage made of elastic bandages is applied to the injured body part to reduce swelling and soreness. If the limb is injured, then it should be fixed in an elevated position.

After two days, cold procedures are replaced by warming ones. You can use warming compresses, hot bath. It is necessary to perform light stretching exercises, do self-massage (stroking, kneading). Medical intervention for stretching the muscles is reduced to physiotherapy, medical massage and the appointment of pain relievers. Of the physiotherapeutic procedures, magnetotherapy, laser therapy and phonophoresis are most often prescribed. Anti-inflammatory and warming ointments can be applied to the skin in the area of injury. They include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nimesil, diclofenac, indomethacin, ibuprofen and others) or bee, snake venom, and red pepper extract.

If the pain is very severe and interferes with sleep, then on the day of the injury and for two to three days, the doctor may prescribe pain pills and injections. If a muscle strain interferes with walking and performing work, then such an injury is an indication for opening a sheet of temporary disability (sick leave).
