Cream for external use 20% Skinoren

Skinoren is a topical drug with antibacterial and antiproliferative effects for the treatment of rosacea, acne and hyperpigmentation.

Release form and composition

  • cream for external use 20%: uniform consistency, matte, white (30 g each in aluminum tubes, 1 tube in a cardboard box);
  • gel for external use 15%: opaque, from white to white with a yellowish tinge (5, 15, 30 and 50 g each in laminated aluminum tubes, 1 tube in a cardboard box).

Skinaren's active substance is azelaic acid:

  • 1 g cream - 200 mg;
  • 1 g of gel - 150 mg.

Auxiliary components of the cream: a mixture of cetostearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, cetyl palmitate and coconut oil fatty acid glycerides, propylene glycol, cetostearyl ethyl capronate, macrogol glyceryl stearate, glycerol 85%, benzoic acid, purified water.

Auxiliary components of the gel: polyacrylic acid, polysorbate 80, disodium edetate, triglycerides, propylene glycol, benzoic acid, sodium hydroxide, lecithin, purified water.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Azelaic acid, the active ingredient of Skinoren, has antibacterial properties, which makes it effective in treating acne (acne). The substance is able to directly affect follicular (hair) hyperkeratosis.

In vivo and in vitro, azelaic acid inhibits the proliferation of keratinocytes (basic cells of the epidermis layer) and normalizes the terminal processes of differentiation of epidermal cells, impaired due to acne.

With Skinoren treatment, there is a significant decrease in the density of propionibacteria acne colonies, as well as a significant decrease in the content of free fatty acids in lipids on the skin surface, which causes a decrease in its fat content.

The mechanism of action of azelaic acid on pathogenic processes arising from rosacea is not precisely established. During clinical studies, it was found that ex vivo and in vitro the substance is able to arrest the inflammation process, reducing the synthesis of reactive oxygen metabolites (free radical forms) due to the production of anti-inflammatory agents.

Azelaic acid inhibits the growth of abnormal melanocytes and reduces their viability, and its effect depends on the dose and duration of Skinoren's use.

When applied topically, azelaic acid penetrates into all layers of the skin. In this case, the compound passes through damaged skin an order of magnitude faster than through intact skin. After a single application of 5 g of Skinoren 20% cream (corresponds to 1 g of azelaic acid), the degree of absorption through the skin does not exceed 3.6% of the total dose.

Clinical studies on the use of Skinoren for acne have proven that the rate of absorption of the active substance for the gel and cream remains the same.

Azelaic acid is excreted from the body in the urine unchanged. The remaining amount enters into degradation reactions and is metabolized to dibasic carboxylic acids with a shorter chain length. Metabolites resulting from beta-oxidation of azelaic acid are also detected in urine.

Indications for use

  • acne vulgaris (acne vulgaris);
  • rosacea (for gel);
  • hyperpigmentation, including chloasma and melasma (for cream).

Contraindications

  • age up to 12 years;
  • hypersensitivity to Skinaren components.

Instructions for the use of Skinoren: method and dosage

Skinoren is applied externally.

The dosage and duration of treatment are set individually.

The cream / gel should be evenly applied with a thin layer in a small amount * to the affected skin 2 times a day (morning and evening) and rubbed lightly. The skin must first be cleansed with a mild cleansing cosmetic and water and dried.

* The amount of the drug should be sufficient, but not excessive. A 2.5 cm strip of cream / gel is sufficient for the entire face.

The duration of therapy depends on the clinical picture and the severity of the disease. With acne, improvement is usually noted after 4 weeks. For best results, it is recommended to continue using the drug for several months.

Melasma treatment lasts at least 3 months. For this disease, Skinoren cream should be used.

Side effects

At the beginning of treatment, in some cases, local irritation is possible: burning, itching, peeling, hyperemia, erythema. Usually, these symptoms are moderately expressed, do not require withdrawal of Skinaren and disappear on their own within a few days.

In very rare cases, allergic skin reactions occur.

Overdose

Overdose cases of Skinoren have not been registered at the moment. Azelaic acid is characterized by low toxicity both at the local and systemic levels, therefore, the manifestation of symptoms of intoxication is considered unlikely.

special instructions

In case of skin irritation, you need to reduce the amount of the drug for a single use or reduce the frequency of its application to 1 time per day. If necessary, you can cancel Skinoren for a few days.

During acne treatment, additional UV protection of the skin is not required.

During melasma therapy, it is imperative to use sunscreens (with protection from UVA and UVB rays) to prevent exacerbation of the disease and / or re-pigmentation of the lightened skin areas.

Care must be taken when applying the cream / gel to avoid contact with eyes and wound surfaces. If this does happen, immediately rinse them with water.

According to the instructions, Skinoren is effective for epidermal and mixed epidermal-dermal types of melasma, but not effective for dermal melasma. The use of a Wood lamp is recommended for differential diagnosis.

The use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation is possible after consulting a doctor. Nursing mothers should avoid applying Skinoren to the breast area before breastfeeding.

Pediatric use

Skinoren is allowed to be prescribed to children over 12 years old. There is no need for dose adjustment.

There is no reliable information about the safety of using Skinoren in children under 12 years of age. Also, the efficacy and safety of the drug in children over 12 years of age in the treatment of papulopustular rosacea has not been established.

Reviews of Skinoren

According to reviews, Skinoren in the form of a gel or cream is an effective remedy for the treatment of acne, and in some cases, the use of the gel can successfully influence the links of the pathogenesis of the disease.

Among the advantages of Skinaren, buyers note that it successfully fights closed comedones, dries out inflammation on the skin well, suppresses the activity of microorganisms that provoke the appearance of acne (while acting not only on the surface of the skin, but also in its deep layers), whitens the skin, helps to get rid of oily sheen and can be used prophylactically.

Cosmetologists say that Skinoren treatment gives good results, but only with a long course of treatment of at least 3 months. Azelaic acid has a cumulative effect, therefore negative reviews associated with the lack of results in acne therapy are explained by improper and / or irregular use of the drug.

An important characteristic of the preparation is a minimal reaction to UV radiation and no effect on skin photosensitivity, which allows Skinoren to be used as a skin care cream before applying cosmetics.

According to experts, for a more pronounced and prolonged effect, Skinoren treatment should be combined with moisturizing the skin with light non-comedogenic creams, correct and regular cleansing of the facial skin, application of alcohol-free tonics, preferably containing acids or herbal extracts.

The disadvantages of the drug include its high cost, as well as the manifestation of side effects: quite severe itching, burning and tingling of the skin.

Experts advise using Skinoren gel to treat patients with oily skin. It is advisable to prescribe the cream to patients with normal, dry or sensitive skin.

Skinoren in all dosage forms has a complex effect on the negative factors that provoke the occurrence of rosacea and acne. However, it does not dry out the skin and is not addictive.

According to the patients, the gel is quickly absorbed without leaving an oily sheen and streaks on the skin. It also has a cooling and moisturizing effect, which makes it suitable for use as a makeup base.

Patients who have used Skinoren cream say that it not only shows good results in the treatment of acne, but also successfully fights post-acne remaining on the face, restores health and natural skin tone, and allows you to get rid of age spots.

In order to determine what is best for the patient - a gel or cream, it is recommended to contact a dermatologist who will select the optimal dosage form of Skinoren for the course of therapy.
