Latin name: Isotrexin
ATX code: D10AD54
Active ingredient: Isotretinoin + Erythromycin (Isotretinoin + Erythromycin)
Manufacturer: Ltd. Stifel Laboratories (Ireland) for GlaxoSmithKline Export Ltd (UK)
Description and photo update: 2019-31-07
Isotrexin is a dermatotropic combination drug for topical use.
Release form and composition
Isotrexin is produced in the form of a gel for external use: soft, pale yellow (6, 25, 30, 40 or 50 g each in aluminum tubes, 1 tube each in a cardboard box).
1 g contains active substances:
- Isotretinoin - 0.5 mg;
- Erythromycin 20 mg
Auxiliary components: butylhydroxytoluene, hyprolose, ethanol.
pharmachologic effect
The drug has keratolytic, antiseborrheic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
Isotrexin gel contains isotretinoin as one of the components, which is similar in structure and pharmacological effect to vitamin A. Retinol, which is part of this substance, ensures the growth and division of epithelial cells. Also, the substance slows down the terminal differentiation of sebocytes and hyperproliferation of the epithelium of the excretory ducts of the sebaceous glands, normalizes the composition of their secretions and facilitates its excretion. Regular drug therapy helps to reduce the activity of the sebaceous glands, eliminate inflammation, inhibit the production of sebum and the activity of bacteria that cause acne.
Erythromycin is a member of the macrolide antibiotic group. The substance acts on the ribosomes of bacteria, preventing their multiplication and interfering with the synthesis of polypeptides. The use of the drug leads to a decrease in the Propionibacterium acnes population and the cessation of the production of inflammatory mediators. Taking erythromycin can contribute to the development of superinfections and strains that are resistant to its effects. However, the combination of erythromycin with isotretinoin in Isotrexin ensures its effectiveness against resistant strains.
According to the instructions, Isotrexin is widely used in the treatment of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory skin diseases. Systemic absorption of the active ingredients of the drug does not occur.
Indications for use
The tool is used to treat mild to moderate acne (acne).
Contraindications
- Children under 12 years of age;
- Hypersensitivity to drug components.
Despite the insignificant percutaneous absorption of isotretinoin, the use of Isotrexin gel is contraindicated in case of established or planned pregnancy.
Since it is not known whether the components of the drug are excreted in breast milk, the drug should not be prescribed during breastfeeding (lactation).
Instructions for the use of Isotrexin: method and dosage
The gel is applied externally.
A thin layer of the preparation is applied to the affected area of the skin 2 times a day: before the morning makeup application and after the evening wash.
It should be borne in mind that for a complete cure, in some cases, it may take 6-8 weeks of therapy.
Side effects
At the site of application of the gel, the following dermatological responses are possible: a sensation of slight irritation, burning and tingling sensations, peeling and erythema. In addition, during treatment, it is possible to increase sensitivity to the action of visible or ultraviolet radiation (photosensitization).
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely. If the drug is accidentally swallowed, symptoms such as drowsiness, irritability, nausea, vomiting, headache, itching may appear. Symptomatic treatment is recommended according to the doctor's prescription.
special instructions
It is necessary to avoid contact of the gel on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth, as well as on areas of the skin with an ulcerated or damaged surface. The drug is carefully applied to sensitive areas of the body - the neck and the skin around the eyes.
Due to the possible development of photosensitivity, prolonged or deliberate exposure to the sun should be minimized.
In case of side effects, which usually appear on the 7-14th day of therapy, the course should be interrupted for several days. It is recommended to resume treatment after signs of irritation disappear. The therapy should be canceled if the side effects persist.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous use of other drugs with exfoliative or keratolytic properties, including drugs from the retinoid group, is not recommended.
The action of the gel weakens the simultaneous intake of antibiotics of the tetracycline group, and the local use of glucocorticosteroids.

Reviews about Isotrexin
According to reviews, Isotrexin, sold at an affordable price, successfully helps to cope with acne and acne in a short time. Most patients forget about such skin diseases forever. However, there is evidence that the drug is very dry to the skin and can cause allergic reactions.
At the beginning of therapy, exacerbations of the patient's condition are often observed. Many patients note the economy of the drug, which can be applied in a very thin layer and only on the affected areas of the skin.
