Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Adapalene is a retinoid metabolite. It has anti-inflammatory and comedolytic effects, as well as normalizes the processes of epidermal differentiation and keratinization.

Adapalene interacts with specific γ-receptors located in the epidermal cells of the skin. The result of this action is, in particular, a decrease in the "cohesion" of epithelial cells at the mouth of the sebaceous hair follicle and, as a consequence, a decrease in the likelihood of microcomedone formation.

The anti-inflammatory effect of adapalene is explained by the inhibition of the metabolism of arachidonic acid and the effect on inflammatory factors due to inhibition of the migration of leukocytes in the inflammatory focus.

Pharmacokinetics

Only about 4% of the applied dose of Differin is absorbed through the skin, therefore the concentration of adapalene in the systemic circulation is very low. The excretion of the drug occurs mainly with bile.

Indications for use

Differin is a drug for the treatment of acne (mild - as a monopreparation, moderate and severe - as part of complex therapy simultaneously with antibacterial and antiandrogenic agents).

Also used to treat comedones.

Contraindications

  • Skin neoplasms;
  • Skin damage and burns;
  • Seborrheic dermatitis;
  • Eczema;
  • Childhood;
  • Pregnancy and lactation;
  • Simultaneous use of systemic drugs from the retinoid group;
  • Hypersensitivity to drug components, retinoids or synthetic analogues of retinoic acid.

Instructions for the use of Differin: method and dosage

Differin cream and gel are applied externally. The drug is applied pointwise to inflammatory elements or, if necessary, to the entire face. It is forbidden to rub the product into the skin! Before applying the gel / cream, you need to cleanse your face (without using soap and alcohol lotions).

The drug should be used once a day, preferably at night. The therapeutic effect is manifested within 4-8 weeks of treatment, persistent improvement is noted after 3 months of therapy.

On the recommendation of a doctor, a second course can be carried out.

Side effects

Side effects more often appear at the beginning of Differin's use and decrease over time. As a rule, the reactions are reversible and do not require discontinuation of the drug.

Possible side effects: irritation, peeling and dry skin, burning and itching at the site of application, erythema, eczema, exacerbation of acne, contact dermatitis, allergic conjunctivitis.

Overdose

The likelihood of an overdose of Differin is extremely low.

special instructions

In the form of a gel, Differin is recommended for people with oily skin, in the form of a cream - with dry skin.

The product should be applied in the thinnest possible layer, the excess of the drug can be removed with a napkin if necessary. It is important to know that the effect does not increase from an excess amount of the drug, but the severity of side effects increases.

Differin can be used on the face, décolleté, shoulders and back.

During the application of the product, care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes, the nasal mucosa and the red border of the lips.

In case of poor tolerance of the drug or the appearance of irritation, it is recommended to reduce the frequency of applications or to suspend treatment until the unpleasant symptoms disappear.

Differin increases the likelihood of sunburn, so exposure to the sun should be avoided during therapy. If necessary, solar exposure should take a break in the use of the drug (do not apply the agent 1 day before and 1 day after exposure, as well as during it).

Cold and wind can increase skin irritation during the application of Differin, therefore it is recommended to avoid prolonged exposure to the street in bad weather or to try to protect the skin from negative environmental factors as much as possible.

You should not use products that dry the skin at the same time: salicylic acid, zinc or sulfur preparations, alcohol products, and perfume.

Differin applied in the evening can be combined with acne medications applied in the morning.

With excessive dryness of the skin, you can use moisturizers containing panthenol - it will help to improve your well-being, relieve skin tightness and burning, and reduce the severity of side effects.

Only non-comedogenic cosmetics can be used during the treatment period.

If after 10 weeks of using the drug there is no effect, you should consult your doctor about the advisability of continuing therapy.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

The drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

During breastfeeding, the use of Differin is permissible, however, in order to avoid the effect of the cream or gel on the baby, the drug should not be applied to the breast skin.

Pediatric use

According to the instructions, Differin is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.

Drug interactions

Differin can be combined with systemic antibacterial agents.

If necessary, you can simultaneously use external preparations containing erythromycin, clindamycin phosphate, benzoyl peroxide, but do intervals between applications (for example, Differin - in the evening, another drug - in the morning) to prevent their physical interaction.

The side effects of adapalene are enhanced by drugs with an irritating and drying effect: products based on salicylic acid, alcohol, sulfur, zinc, resorcinol.

Comedogenic oils can reduce the effectiveness of adapalene.

Analogs

Differin's analogs are: Adapalen, Klenzit, Vidistem, Radevit, Retasol, Diaknel.

Terms and conditions of storage

Store at temperatures up to 25 ºС. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

The shelf life of the cream is 2 years, the gel is 3 years.

Terms of dispensing from pharmacies

Available without a prescription.

Reviews of Differin

Reviews of Differin on specialized sites are quite common. In the vast majority of cases, the drug turns out to be an effective remedy for acne, blackheads and acne. Differin's advantage over cosmetics is that it treats the underlying disease, and does not mask its symptoms. It is worth noting that the drug is very active and at the beginning of therapy can cause severe irritation and peeling of the skin, which patients often write about in their reviews. Due to dehydration under the influence of Differin, the skin can become gray and tired. After the end of the course of treatment, it takes some time to recover, as well as a good moisturizer. The action of the drug lasts a long time, therefore, even despite its high cost, it is popular among patients.

Differin price in pharmacies

The drug in the form of a cream for external use (30 g in aluminum tubes) can be purchased at a price of 680-780 rubles. The price of Differin in the form of a gel (30 g each in plastic tubes) ranges from 720 to 800 rubles.
