Aerus is a drug with anti-inflammatory, antiviral and proteolysis inhibiting action.

Release form and composition

Aerus is produced in the form of a metered aerosol for inhalation, which is a transparent colorless or slightly yellow solution (250 doses or 350 doses in metal aerosol cans with a metering valve, in a cardboard box one can, complete with a nozzle for a nose, a nozzle for a mouth and safety caps).

Composition of 1 dose:

  • active substance: aprotinin (in the form of a concentrated solution) - 85 KIE (0.013 mg) (which corresponds to 0.00043 ml of a concentrated solution);
  • auxiliary components: 96% ethanol, peppermint leaf oil, 96% glycerol, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane.

A concentrated solution of aprotinin contains purified water as an auxiliary component.

Indications for use

Aerus is used to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases of viral origin (influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections).

Contraindications

  • allergic reactions (including allergy to protein in cattle);
  • disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome;
  • children and adolescents up to 18 years of age (since there is no experience of clinical use in this age group);
  • period of pregnancy;
  • period of breastfeeding;
  • hypersensitivity to aprotinin or other components of the drug.

Method of administration and dosage

Aerus is intended for inhalation use.

The recommended dose is one inhalation (one dose) in each nostril every 2-4 hours. One inhalation dose contains 85 KIU of aprotinin.

The maximum dose is 50–65 KIE per day per 1 kg of body weight.

In case of viral inflammation in the nasal cavity, the basic course is as follows: inhale through the nose, and exhale through the mouth. With symptoms of viral inflammation in the oropharynx, bronchi and trachea: inhale through the mouth, exhale through the nose. Combined inhalation is also possible, that is, one dose is inhaled through the mouth, the other into the nasal passages.

The duration of the course with the frequency of inhalations every 2-4 hours is 3-8 days and depends on the severity of the disease.

Rules for using the inhaler

Before the first inhalation, press the metering valve twice.

Inhalation procedure:

  1. Remove the protective cap, shake the can.
  2. Take a deep breath.
  3. While holding the inhaler upright, squeeze the mouthpiece with your lips (if inhaling through the mouth) or insert the nasal nozzle into your nostril (if inhaling through the nose).
  4. Inhale deeply and simultaneously press the metering valve. Hold your breath for 1-2 seconds, then remove the nozzle from your mouth or nose and exhale.
  5. Reinsert the protective cover (to protect the dispensing head from damage, a mouthpiece is installed on it, which is closed with a protective cover).

If the inhaler has not been used for three or more days, press the metering valve once before inhaling again.

Side effects

When administered by inhalation, side effects are rare. Possible undesirable effects from the following systems and organs:

  • digestive system: vomiting, nausea;
  • central nervous system: confusion, hallucinations, psychotic reaction;
  • cardiovascular system: tachycardia, decrease in blood pressure, pallor of the skin;
  • allergic reactions: conjunctivitis, rhinitis, skin rash, anaphylactic reactions (including anaphylactic shock);
  • local reactions: bleeding and dryness of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.

special instructions

The inhaler tips must be kept clean. You can use warm water or 40% ethanol in water to rinse the tips. In the case of using soap or other agents for hygienic treatment, they should be thoroughly rinsed with a stream of clean water.

The nasal and oral nozzles from the Aerus kit should not be used with other inhalation solutions. It is also not recommended to use nozzles from other preparations for spraying Aerus.

With the development of anaphylactic reaction, conventional measures are taken (administration of prednisolone, epinephrine and plasma substitutes). The drug is prescribed with extreme caution to patients with a tendency to allergies. Such patients may be prescribed antihistamines before inhalation.

Drug interactions

Aerus is not prescribed simultaneously with urokinase and streptokinase, as it inhibits their action.

Caution should be exercised when using aprotinin together with beta-lactam antibiotics and heparin, since a direct chemical interaction is possible between them.
