Herbs for high blood pressure are one of the popular treatments for hypertension. In the early stages of the disease, herbal medicine often allows you to achieve normalization of blood pressure (BP) without the need to take pills. At the II-III stage of hypertension, patients need regular complex therapy, which includes the appointment of medications, physiotherapy procedures, spa treatment and medicinal herbs that lower blood pressure.

A few decades ago, hypertension was mainly observed in people over 40-50 years old. Now the disease has become much younger and is often diagnosed even in adolescents. Long-term high blood pressure has a negative effect on the state of the cerebral vessels, contributes to an increase in blood sugar, is one of the main risk factors for coronary heart disease, the manifestations of which are angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and postinfarction cardiosclerosis. Therefore, it is very important to timely identify arterial hypertension and carry out its regular treatment as prescribed by a doctor.

Features of herbal medicine for hypertension

Herbs for high blood pressure are widely used not only in folk, but also in traditional medicine. Their use helps in a short time to achieve a stable therapeutic effect and in some cases to reduce the intake of antihypertensive drugs.

All medicinal herbs for high blood pressure, depending on the mechanism of action, are divided into several groups:

  • herbs with a diuretic effect;
  • herbs with antispasmodic action;
  • herbal preparations for high blood pressure, which have a complex effect.

Herbal medicine for hypertension is usually carried out with water infusions or decoctions of medicinal plants. The course of treatment in most cases lasts 3-4 weeks. To achieve a therapeutic effect, it should be repeated many times with short breaks.

It is necessary to carefully follow the recipe for the preparation of infusions and decoctions, proper heat treatment of plant materials and compliance with the proportions allow you to get the most useful products.

Water infusions and decoctions have a low therapeutic effect, inferior in their therapeutic effectiveness to alcoholic tinctures, but often it is precisely such a mild action that is required. Both infusions and alcoholic tinctures are not difficult to prepare at home. For tincture, take the required amount of medicinal raw materials and pour vodka or medical alcohol. Insist for at least two weeks, it is usually recommended to do this in a dark place. Then strain and take as drops.

Medicines with antihypertensive action sold in a pharmacy, of course, are able to lower blood pressure more quickly. However, herbal medicine for hypertension has its benefits:

  • naturalness;
  • ease of use;
  • wide availability;
  • low price;
  • almost complete absence of side effects.

At the same time, this method of treatment is not devoid of its own shortcomings, which include:

  • allergic reactions in case of individual intolerance;
  • slow action;
  • the need to spend time on your own preparation of drugs;
  • short shelf life of water decoctions and infusions (no more than 24 hours)

During pregnancy, herbal medicine can be carried out only as directed by a doctor and with a certain degree of caution, since many medicinal plants can increase the tone of the uterus.

How to lower blood pressure with herbs

Long-term treatment of hypertension with medicinal herbs allows you to bring blood pressure back to normal, but also to achieve other positive effects:

  • lowering blood cholesterol levels;
  • elimination of tinnitus;
  • reduction of edema;
  • increasing the elasticity of blood vessels;
  • normalization of the functions of the central nervous system.

It is also important that herbs from pressure strengthen blood vessels, thereby reducing the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Before we talk about which herbs lower blood pressure, a little attention should be paid to the general principles of herbal medicine for hypertension:

  • drugs with a strong hypotensive effect can be taken only at blood pressure above 150 / 90-100 mm Hg, in order to prevent a rapid fall in blood pressure and the development of hypotension;
  • herbal teas with a diuretic effect are taken in courses lasting 7-10 days;
  • fees that strengthen the walls of blood vessels or aimed at normalizing lipid metabolism must be taken for a long time in repeated courses.

In the treatment of hypertension, herbs with analgesic and antispasmodic effects are also widely used, which help to eliminate headaches and improve the general well-being of patients.

What herbs lower blood pressure?

For effective herbal medicine of hypertension, it is necessary to use medicinal plants that affect various links in the pathological mechanism leading to an increase in blood pressure. Consider the main groups of herbs that lower blood pressure.

Herbs that reduce blood viscosity

With high blood viscosity, its flow through the vessels becomes difficult, the blood supply to the brain, myocardium, and kidneys deteriorates. The list of herbs used to improve blood circulation is quite long. Most often used:

  1. Horse chestnut. The peel (50 g) is removed from the chestnut, washed and dried. Then grind and pour half a liter of quality vodka. Insist 15 days in a dark and cool place, periodically shaking the container. Filter the finished tincture and take one teaspoon 1-2 times a day half an hour before meals. The course of treatment is 3 weeks. It can be repeated in a month.
  2. Garlic. Peel three large heads of garlic and chop in mashed potatoes with a blender. Pour 500 ml of vodka, strain after two weeks. Add a glass of liquid honey and a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice to the resulting tincture. Take a tablespoon at night. The resulting volume of the drug mixture is enough for one course of treatment.

These tinctures are also suitable for men and women suffering from varicose veins of the lower extremities, thrombophlebitis.

List of herbs acting on vascular tone

There is a whole group of medicinal plants, which, with long-term use, help to improve the elasticity of blood vessels, reduce the permeability of their walls. The most effective of them are the berries of hawthorn and black chokeberry, lemon balm, periwinkle, mordvinka, mistletoe.

In the treatment of hypertension, the following composition is used:

  • motherwort herb - 4 tablespoons;
  • lemon balm - 1 tablespoon;
  • dry dried-up - 2 tablespoons;
  • hawthorn berries - 1 tablespoon;
  • chokeberry berries - 1 tablespoon.

Mix the vegetable raw materials thoroughly. Put 3 tablespoons of the resulting collection in a thermos and pour half a liter of boiling water. Insist 3 hours, drain. To quickly reduce high blood pressure, you must take 100 ml of infusion, and for prevention purposes, you should drink 50 ml three times a day.

An effective remedy for high blood pressure is periwinkle alcohol tincture. To prepare it, grind 200 g of periwinkle and pour the raw material with a liter of vodka. Insist 7 days, drain. Take 5 drops twice a day, the course of treatment is 10-12 days. It should be remembered that periwinkle is a poisonous plant, therefore, violation of the recipe for the preparation of a tincture or dosage threatens intoxication of the body. For the elderly, children and pregnant women, periwinkle tincture is contraindicated.

Plants with a diuretic effect

Herbs with a diuretic effect are one of the most important components of herbal medicine for hypertension. By removing excess fluid from the body, edema is eliminated, the load on the heart is reduced and blood circulation is improved. The most famous diuretic herbs are:

  • St. John's wort;
  • linden flowers;
  • peppermint;
  • Dill seeds;
  • dog-rose fruit;
  • milk thistle.

Infusions are usually prepared from these medicinal plants. To do this, take one tablespoon of plant materials and place it in a thermos. Pour half a liter of boiling water and leave for 20-30 minutes (rose hips 2-3 hours). Strain and take half a glass 2-3 times a day.

With pronounced edema and high blood pressure, traditional medicine recommends collecting the following composition:

  • birch leaves;
  • chamomile flowers;
  • St. John's wort herb.

Mix the vegetable raw materials. Take three teaspoons of the resulting collection and pour half a liter of boiling water. Insist for 15-20 minutes. Strain and take 1 glass twice a day.

Aronia berries have an excellent diuretic effect. Juice is prepared from them (one glass is taken once a day), or tea is brewed.

Sedative Herbs

Overexcitation of the central nervous system plays an important role in the pathological mechanism of the development of hypertension. The rapid pace of modern life, frequent stress, overwork and chronic lack of sleep are the factors that in many cases underlie the triggering of the pathological mechanism of arterial hypertension. That is why the prescription of herbal teas for patients, which have a sedative (calming) and mild hypnotic effect, is of great importance in complex therapy. Most often used:

  1. Infusion of motherwort. Brew a teaspoon of motherwort herb with a glass of boiling water. Insist for 20 minutes. Strain. Take a glass 30-40 minutes before bedtime. The course of treatment is 10-14 days.
  2. Infusion of chamomile, valerian and lemon balm. Put in a glass half a teaspoon of lemon balm herb, chamomile flowers and chopped valerian rhizome. Top up with boiling water and leave for 40 minutes. Strain. Take half a glass half an hour before bedtime.
  3. Infusion of hawthorn. Brew one teaspoon with a glass of boiling water. Take half a glass 1-2 times a day. The hawthorn infusion is especially effective in patients with cardio-neurosis and vegetative-vascular dystonia of the cardiac type.
