What are dietary supplements? Why is there so much talk lately that food additives are harmful? If they are harmful, then why are they food? Let's try to answer these and some other questions. So what exactly are nutritional supplements? This term refers to substances that are not included in the composition of food, but are added to them in order to give food some additional properties. Food additives change the taste, color, aroma, texture, and shelf life of food. With rare exceptions, they are artificially synthesized chemical compounds.

It must be said right away that not a single food supplement manufacturer focuses on human health. Their main task is to make food more salable. That is, this is a marketing tool, a concern for increasing profits, and not at all about a person. Of course, it would be wrong to completely poison people, because then no one will buy even the most beautiful packaging of the product. Therefore, harmful food additives, strictly speaking, are not a poison, manufacturers monitor this. But they are also not useful, or at least harmless. Why? First of all, because these substances are foreign to the body. When ingested, they are not digested, and cannot be disposed of either. The body is simply not adapted for them, does not have a "program of action" in this regard, and therefore such substances tend to accumulate in various organs, for example, in the liver.

We are told that harmful food additives are used in such small dosages that they have no toxic effects. However, doctors say this is not the case. Firstly, the above-described cumulative effect leads to the fact that the concentration of toxic substances increases over time, especially with frequent use of products containing such additives. Moreover, as we know, the digestive tract is not a neutral environment. There are a large number of digestive enzymes that chemically react with food. How food additives behave in this case is not known for certain, but biochemists argue that the intermediate decomposition products of such substances are almost always poisonous to humans.

Harmful food additives are found in most industrially produced foods. Their concentration is especially high in semi-finished products, confectionery products, and meat products. It is unlikely that a modern city dweller will be able to completely avoid meeting them. Nevertheless, you need to try to ensure that the main diet consists of healthy, natural products that are bought raw and prepared at home. In this case, harmful food additives, even if they occasionally enter your body, will be neutralized by a strong defense system. A strong, healthy organism copes well with a small amount of poison.
