Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Ferlatum Fol - a drug used to treat anemia, containing iron and calcium folinate; compensates for the deficiency of iron and folate in the body.

The main function of iron is to transport oxygen to tissues and organs. Being a part of hemoglobin, iron-containing enzymes-cytochromes, myoglobin, iron carries out the transfer of electrons and acts as a catalyst for hydroxylation, oxidation, and other metabolic reactions.

Ferlatum Fol contains iron in the form of a succinylate protein, which is a complex compound in which ferric atoms are enclosed in a semi-synthetic protein carrier, which prevents ulceration of the gastric mucosa. Dissolving in the duodenum, the protein carrier releases the trace element in the zone of optimal absorption.

Fe 3+ enters the bloodstream from the intestine by active absorption, as a result of which its overdose and intoxication are practically impossible.

Calcium folinate - the second active component of the drug - is a calcium salt of folinic acid, which compensates for the lack of folate in the body.

Indications for use

  • latent and clinically pronounced iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) and folate deficiency (therapy);
  • iron and folate deficiency in pregnant women, nursing mothers, during the period of active growth, as a result of prolonged bleeding, with inadequate and unbalanced nutrition (prevention).

Contraindications

Absolute:

  • disruption of iron utilization processes [including lead and (or) sideroachrestic anemia];
  • hemochromatosis;
  • non-megaloblastic anemia (including hemolytic, megaloblastic anemia and anemia caused by vitamin B 12 deficiency);
  • cirrhosis of the liver;
  • chronic pancreatitis;
  • hypersensitivity to any component of the drug.

Relative contraindications (conditions in which the drug is used with caution): gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, malabsorption due to pathology of the small intestine (including malabsorption syndrome, enteritis, resection of the small intestine, gastric resection according to Billroth II with the inclusion of the duodenum).

Instructions for the use of Ferlatum Foul: method and dosage

The prepared Ferlatum Fol solution is intended for oral administration. Take the drug before meals or immediately after meals.

The recommended dosage regimen for different categories of patients, if there are no other doctor's prescriptions:

  • adults: 1–2 bottles (equivalent to Fe 3+ - 40–80 mg; calcium folinate pentahydrate - 0.235–0.470 mg) per day, divided into 2 doses;
  • children from the neonatal period: 1.5 ml / kg (equivalent to Fe 3+ - 4 mg / kg; calcium folinate pentahydrate - 0.0235 mg / kg) per day, divided into 2 doses;
  • pregnant women: for the prevention of iron deficiency anemia - 1 bottle per day; for the treatment of latent or clinically pronounced iron deficiency - 1-2 vials per day, divided into 2 doses.

After reaching normal levels of iron and hemoglobin in the blood serum, it is recommended to continue therapy at a maintenance dose for at least 8-12 weeks.

The sequence of actions when preparing a solution for oral administration:

  • forcefully press the perforator of the container cap so that the powder in it spills out into the solution in the bottle;
  • shake the resulting contents of the bottle vigorously;
  • remove the dispenser cover;
  • drink the solution.
