Pharmacological action of Famvir
Famvir is the oral form of the antiviral penciclovir. It is active against herpes viruses type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and Varicella-Zoster virus. Once in cells infected with the virus, it turns into triphosphate and inhibits the replication (reproduction) of viral DNA. Famvir is unable to affect healthy, virus-free cells. Viruses practically do not develop resistance to the action of the drug, including in persons with reduced immunity.
According to reviews, Famvir significantly reduces pain in neuralgia caused by herpes zoster.
In the studies carried out, the drug has proven its safety against gene mutations in both bacteria and mammals.
The drug is almost completely and quickly absorbed from the digestive tract, its bioavailability is 77%. In the body, it is converted into an analogue of Famvir, penciclovir. Excretion from the body in a partially metabolized form is carried out through the kidneys.
Famvir's analogues are Famciclovir and Minaker.

According to the instructions, Famvir is released in the form of tablets of 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 g.
Indications for Famvir's use
The drug is prescribed for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by herpes viruses type 1 and 2. It is effective both in primary infection, when the symptoms of the disease first appeared, and in exacerbation of chronic infection of labial and genital herpes. Famvir also acts on cytomegalovirus and herpes zoster virus, including postherpetic neuralgia with ocular complications (ophthalmic herpes).
Contraindications
The drug is not used in case of intolerance to it and penciclavir. There are no reviews of Famvir in children under 18, therefore, when prescribing the drug, they should weigh the risk / benefit ratio.
Famvir instructions for use
The tablets are taken orally, without chewing, regardless of food. Famvir will be most effective if treatment is started as early as possible after the symptoms of the disease appear (at the stage of itching and tingling with herpes and shingles).
In the case of herpes zoster in people with a normal immune status, as well as in ophthalmic herpes, their dosage will be 0.5 g 3 times a day, the duration of the course is 7 days. This mode of administration reduces the neuralgic manifestations of the disease.
In the acute phase of herpes zoster, to get rid of skin rashes, it is recommended to take 0.25 g 3 times a day or 0.5 g 2 times a day. A single intake of a daily dose of 0.75 g is possible. The course lasts 7 days.
In case of herpes zoster in persons with suppressed immunity, it is recommended to take 0.5 g 3 times a day for a course of 10 days.
For the treatment of primary genital herpes with normal immunity, the dose is 0.25 g 3 times a day for 5 consecutive days, in case of relapse - 1 g 2 times within 1 day or 0.125 g 2 times a day for 5 days.
Relapse of labial herpes with normal immune status is treated with a single dose of 1.5 g or 0.75 g 2 times a day for 1 day.
With labial and genital herpes against a background of reduced immunity, it is recommended to take 0.5 g 3 times a day for 7 days.
Genital herpes is transmitted from person to person through sexual contact, and during flare-ups, the risk of infection is especially high.
In case of impaired renal function, the dose of Famvir is reduced according to the instructions.
For elderly patients with intact renal function, there is no need to adjust the dose.
Side effects
According to reviews, Famvir is capable of occasionally causing nausea, moderate headaches, vomiting, dizziness, skin rash. With reduced immunity, sometimes there are abdominal pains.
