Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Chondroxide is a drug that stimulates regeneration and regulates metabolism in cartilage tissue. The action of the drug is due to the activity of chondroitin sulfate, a high molecular weight mucopolysaccharide involved in the construction of cartilage tissue. Being a natural substance, it helps to improve phosphorus-calcium metabolism in cartilage tissue and the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. By reducing the activity of enzymes that cause the destruction of cartilage tissue, chondroitin sulfate inhibits the processes of degeneration and destruction of cartilage tissue, prevents the collapse of connective tissue. Influences metabolic processes in fibrous and hyaline cartilage.
As a result of stimulating the biosynthesis of proteoglycans, the processes of bone tissue repair are accelerated, the joint capsule and the cartilaginous surface of the joints are regenerated. The drug increases the production of intra-articular fluid. By slowing down bone resorption, it reduces calcium loss and accelerates bone regeneration. Structural similarity with heparin allows us to expect from the drug the ability to prevent the formation of fibrin thrombi in the synovial and subchondral microvasculature.
Chondroxide has chondrostimulating, regenerating and anti-inflammatory effects. The combined action of the drug slows down the progression of osteoarthritis and osteochondrosis, is manifested by a decrease in pain and increased mobility of the affected joints, and reduces their swelling.
Pharmacokinetics
Pills
After a single oral administration of an average therapeutic dose of Chondroxide, the maximum concentration (C max) of chondroitin sodium sulfate in plasma is reached within 3-4 hours, in synovial fluid - within 4-5 hours, in articular cartilage - after 48 hours. The bioavailability of the drug is 13%.
The synovium does not prevent the drug from entering the joint cavity. The accumulation of chondroitin sodium sulfate occurs mainly in the cartilage tissue.
It is excreted through the kidneys within 24 hours.
Ointment and gel
Absorption of the active substance when applied externally is good. The penetration of chondroitin sulfate through the cell membranes into the tissues is facilitated by the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide in the preparation.
After applying chondroitin ointment or gel to the skin, sulphate quickly and selectively enters the joint, where its C max is reached after 0.5 hours.
Removal of the drug from the cartilage tissue occurs in 2 phases. The fast withdrawal phase ends 1 hour after application. The retention period of chondroitin sulfate in the joint is 5 hours.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Chondroxide is indicated for the prevention and treatment of degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the joints and spine: osteoarthritis, osteochondrosis of the spine.
Contraindications
The use of Chondroxide is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
In addition, there are additional contraindications for certain dosage forms.
