Cephalexin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the cephalosporin group, a derivative of 7-aminocephalosporic acid. There are three forms of release: capsules (250 mg), tablets (250 mg) and powder for suspension (2.5 g).
pharmachologic effect
The principle of action of Cephalexin according to the instructions is bactericidal. Streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, salmonella, Escherichia coli, Shigella, Proteus, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella, Treponema and some other organisms are sensitive to the drug. Enterobacteriaceae, enterococci and mycobacterium tuberculosis are resistant to Cephalexin.
Absorption of Cephalexin is almost 90%, the drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Despite the fact that the antibiotic Cephalexin is acid-resistant, food intake after or during the intake of the drug can slow down its absorption, but, in general, does not affect its completeness. The maximum concentration of the active substance in the blood is reached 1-2 hours after the application of Cephalexin: the antibiotic is evenly distributed in the mucous membrane of the bronchi, lungs, liver, kidneys, heart. Against the background of diseases associated with impaired renal function, the concentration of the drug in the blood increases, and the half-life is lengthened, amounting to 20-40 hours.
Indications for the use of Cephalexin
According to the instructions, Cephalexin is indicated for use when:
• Diseases of the respiratory tract caused by pathogens sensitive to Cephalexin (pneumonia, bronchitis, pleurisy, lung abscess);
• Violations of the urinary and reproductive systems (cystitis, pyelonephritis, vulvovaginitis, epididymitis, endometritis);
• Diseases of the ENT organs (pharyngitis, otitis media, tonsillitis);
• Diseases of the skin (pyoderma, phlegmon, furunculosis, abscess);
• Disorders of the musculoskeletal system (arthritis, osteomyelitis).
Contraindications Cephalexin
Hypersensitivity to antibiotics of the cephalosporin and penicillin series, in order to avoid the possibility of cross-allergy.
Side effects
According to some reviews of Cephalexin, the following side effects can be noted when using an antibiotic:
• From the side of the central nervous system: agitation, weakness, hallucinations, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, convulsions;
• From the urinary system, interstitial nephritis is possible;
• From the reproductive system: vaginal discharge, vaginitis, genital candidiasis;
• From the digestive system: vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, intestinal candidiasis, dyspepsia, in some cases - pseudomembranous enterocolitis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice;
• From the hematopoietic system: neutropenia, reversible leukopenia, thrombocytopenia;
• On the part of laboratory parameters: an increase in prothrombin time, an increase in the activity of alkaline phosphatase and hepatic transaminases;
In addition, reviews to Cephalexin provide for the possibility of allergic reactions, urticaria, malignant exudative erythema, anaphylaxis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, arthritis, genital itching, dermatitis, in rare cases - Quincke's edema.
Dosage of Cephalexin
The optimal dosage of Cephalexin according to the instructions is determined taking into account the localization and sensitivity of the pathogen, as well as the severity of the course of the disease. The average dose for adults when taking Cephalexin orally is 250-500 mg every 6-12 hours. The duration of the course of treatment is 1-2 weeks. For children whose body weight does not reach 40 kg, the average dosage is 25-50 mg / kg 3-4 times a day.
special instructions
The use of the antibiotic Cephalexin is recommended with caution in patients with pseudomembranous colitis and a history of renal failure. During treatment, a false-positive urine reaction to sugar may occur, as well as a positive direct Coombs reaction. The drug penetrates well through the placental barrier, therefore, the use of Cephalexin during pregnancy and breastfeeding is possible in the case when the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the expected risk to the development of the fetus or child.
During therapy with Cephalexin, alcohol is prohibited.
Drug interaction Cephalexin
With the simultaneous use of Cephalexin increases the nephrotoxicity of polymyxins, aminoglycosides, furosemide, phenylbutazone. The excretion of the active substance of the drug is slowed down by indomethacin and salicylates.
