Metamizole sodium (in Russia known as Analgin) is a drug from the pyrazolone group and has an analgesic effect. The drug effectively relieves pain syndrome of various etiologies, blocks the passage of pain impulses along nerve bundles, increases the pain sensitivity threshold.
Composition and form of release
The drug consists of the sodium salt of methanesulfonic acid. Metamizole sodium is a pyrazolone derivative.
It is available in capsules and tablets, as well as in the form of a solution for intravenous or intramuscular administration. For children, rectal suppositories are produced.
Pharmacological properties of Metamizole sodium
Metamizole sodium has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, antipyretic and antispasmodic properties. The drug actively affects the smooth muscles of the muscles and urinary tract, eliminating spasms and pain syndrome.
The therapeutic effect of active substances develops within 20-30 minutes after taking the drug. Metamizole sodium is excreted from the body within 5 hours.
When treating children under the age of 5, it is necessary to take the drug only under the supervision of a doctor.
Patients with bronchial asthma are at risk of developing allergic reactions to the components of the drug.
Indications for the use of Metamizole sodium
Metamizole sodium is prescribed for infectious and inflammatory diseases, allergic reactions after insect bites, as well as for pain, including neuralgia, intestinal and biliary colic, trauma, burns, sciatica, myositis, lichen.
The analgesic relieves pain of varying severity in the postoperative period, and also eliminates toothache and headache.
Instructions for the use of Metamizole sodium
Metamizole sodium is prescribed for adults 2-3 times a day at 500 mg, and for children under 5 years old - 100 mg and up to 10 years old - 200 mg. The daily dose of the drug for adults should not exceed 3 g, and for children - 1 g.
When prescribing Metamizole sodium in the form of injections, the solution must correspond to the patient's body temperature. An incorrectly selected dose of the drug can lead to a sharp decrease in pressure and a coma.
The dose of the drug in rectal form for adults should be no more than 1000 mg, and for children - no more than 400 mg. Children with the introduction of the drug in the form of suppositories should be in the supine position and complete rest.
With prolonged use of the drug, the state of the peripheral blood should be carefully monitored. You should not take Metamizole sodium to relieve acute pain without finding out the cause.
Contraindications
Contraindications to taking Metamizole sodium are hypersensitivity and individual intolerance to the components of the drug, the presence of infectious neutropenia, hepatic and renal failure, as well as anemia of a hereditary nature, which is associated with glucose deficiency.
You should not prescribe Metamizole sodium for "aspirin" asthma, a decrease in the content of leukocytes in the blood and allergy to acetylsalicylic acid.
The drug is prescribed with caution during pregnancy and lactation, at the age of up to 4 months, as well as when taking medications containing ethanol.
Side effects of Metamizole sodium
Side effects when taking Metamizole sodium can be pronounced and accompanied by various complications.
From the genitourinary system, the following side effects are possible: renal failure, anuria, interstitial nephritis, proteinuria.
From the side of the circulatory system: leukopenia, thrombocytosis, agranulocytosis.
The drug can cause allergic reactions: allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria, rash, Quincke's edema, toxic necrolysis, bronchospasm, anaphylactic shock.
Do not take Metamizole sodium at the same time as other analgesics, codeine and myelotoxic drugs, which can lead to intoxication or diseases of the circulatory system.
