Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Solvin's active substance has mucolytic (secretolytic) and expectorant effects. The mucolytic effect is provided by the process of depolymerization, followed by liquefaction of mucopolysaccharide and mucoprotein fibers. The effect of bromhexine is manifested 2–5 days after the start of the course. The agent activates the production of endogenous surfactant, which is responsible for maintaining the stability of alveolar cells during respiration.
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration, the active substance is almost completely (up to 99%) absorbed from the gastrointestinal (GIT) within 30 minutes, the bioavailability is approximately 80%. The drug passes through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the placenta.
Biotransformation of bromhexine occurs in the liver by demethylation and oxidation, resulting in the formation of ambroxol. The half-life (T 1/2) is 15 hours, which is due to the slow process of reverse diffusion from tissues. The agent is excreted in the urine, and can accumulate during repeated use.
Indications for use
Solvin is recommended for use for the treatment of the following acute and chronic lung diseases, occurring with the formation of high-viscosity sputum: cystic fibrosis, bronchial asthma, tracheobronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, obstructive bronchitis, pneumoconiosis, pulmonary emphysema, tuberculosis.
Solvin is also prescribed for chest injuries.
Contraindications
Absolute:
- stomach ulcer;
- age up to 3 years (for tablets);
- pregnancy and lactation;
- glucose-galactose malabsorption, lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance (for tablets, since they contain lactose);
- hypersensitivity to any component of the mucolytic agent.
Relative (it is recommended to take Solvin with caution):
- history of gastric bleeding;
- lesions of the bronchi, accompanied by excessive accumulation of secretions;

- digestive system: dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, exacerbation of gastric ulcer, increased activity of hepatic transaminases.
With the development of similar or other disorders not listed above, you should consult your doctor.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose of bromhexine may include dyspeptic symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, and nausea.

There is no data on the adverse effect of Solvin on the ability to drive and maintain complex mechanisms.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
During pregnancy and lactation, the use of Solvin is contraindicated.
Pediatric use
Children under 3 years old are contraindicated to take Solvin tablets. For pediatric patients under 6 years of age, it is recommended to use the drug in the form of an elixir.
Therapy with the drug in children should be combined with vibration massage of the chest or postural (positional) drainage to facilitate the evacuation of secretions from the bronchi.

Reviews about Solvin
Since there are currently no patient reviews on Solvin on specialized Internet resources, the opinion of specialists about the drug is interesting. For example, Dr. Komarovsky writes in his book that the active component of the drug, bromhexine, is one of the five chemical compounds of mucolytic action. And the choice of a particular mucolytic, as well as the duration of its use, and the dose are individual. They must be determined by a doctor, in accordance with the patient's age, diagnosis, severity of the disease and taking into account other important criteria.
It is advisable to use mucolytics for thick, viscous sputum. But they are practically useless for wet coughs and mild forms of acute respiratory viral infections with upper respiratory tract damage. Moreover, most often these drugs aggravate the patient's condition, since they can provoke an increase in coughing. Mucolytics are also unable to exert their therapeutic effect, that is, to improve the rheology of sputum, if the rheology of the blood is not improved, and this requires additional therapy with drugs of a different pharmacological property.
The effectiveness of mucolytic agents is expressed insignificantly and for a short time, if the factors provoking the drying out of mucous membranes and mucus are not eliminated, and the optimal temperature and humidity in the room are not provided.
It should also be remembered that bromhexine is not related to alternative medicine, or to medicinal herbs and traditional medicine.
