Release form and composition
Dosage forms:
- Capsules Legalon 140: size No. 1, gelatinous, solid structure, with a brown lid and body, inside the capsules - yellow powder (10 pcs. In blisters, in a cardboard box 2, 3 or 6 blisters);
- Capsules Legalon 70 (10 pcs. In a blister strip, in a cardboard box 2, 3 or 6 packages);
- Dragee Legalon 70 (10 pcs. In a blister strip, in a cardboard box 2 or 4 packs).
The active ingredient is dry extract of milk thistle fruit:
- 1 capsule No. 1 - 173-186.7 mg, which is equivalent to 140 mg of silymarin and in terms of silybinin - 108.2 mg;
- 1 capsule (Legalon 70) - 86.5-93.35 mg, which is equivalent to 70 mg of silymarin and in terms of silybinin - 54.1 mg;
- 1 tablet (Legalon 70) - 90 mg, which is equivalent to 70 mg of silymarin and 30 mg (minimum) of silibinin.
Auxiliary components of capsules No. 1: povidone, polysorbate 80, mannitol, magnesium stearate, sodium carboxymethyl starch (type A).
Composition of capsule shell No. 1: titanium dioxide (E171), iron dye red oxide (E172), iron dye black oxide (E172), sodium lauryl sulfate, gelatin.
Pharmacological properties
Legalon has anti-inflammatory (inhibits inflammatory processes in the liver), hepatoprotective [protects liver cells (hepatocytes), preventing toxic effects on them and further destruction], detoxification (cleans the liver of toxic substances, including free radicals), regenerating (promotes the restoration of liver cells) action.
Pharmacodynamics
The active components of the drug interact with free radicals in the liver, promoting their transformation into less toxic compounds by interrupting the process of lipid peroxidation and preventing the destruction of cellular structures. The drug activates the synthesis of functional and structural phospholipids and proteins in damaged hepatocytes through specific stimulation of RNA polymerase A, prevents the loss of cell components (transaminases), stabilizes cell membranes, and accelerates the recovery of liver cells. Also Legalon inhibits the penetration of certain hepatotoxic substances into the cell.
Pharmacokinetics
The degree of absorption of the drug is low, and the process itself is slow (the half-absorption period is 2.2 hours). Legalon is metabolized in the liver by conjugation. The half-life is 6 hours. The active substances are excreted mainly in the bile in the form of sulfates and glucuronides. The drug does not accumulate in the body and is involved in the processes of intestinal-hepatic circulation.
Indications for use
According to the instructions, Legalon in all dosage forms is used to treat and prevent toxic liver damage of various origins:
- Intoxication of the body with compounds of heavy metals and / or halogenated hydrocarbons;
- Poisoning with drugs;
- Alcoholism.
In addition, Legalon 70 in the form of capsules and dragees is prescribed for patients with chronic inflammatory liver diseases and cirrhosis in the form of supportive therapy.
Contraindications
The use of capsules and pills is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
You can not prescribe the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Instructions for the use of Legalon: method and dosage
Capsules and pills are taken orally, after meals, swallowing whole and drinking plenty of water.
The recommended dosage for initial therapy and severe forms of intoxication is 1 capsule or 2 tablets 3 times a day. Then the patient is transferred to receive a maintenance dose - 1 capsule 2 times a day or 1 tablet 3 times a day.
Side effects
In rare cases, the use of Legalon can cause side effects in the form of diarrhea.
Allergic reactions may develop while taking capsules.
Overdose
There are no reports of legalon overdose cases.

In patients with liver cirrhosis, the use of silibinin helps to increase survival.
Patients with diabetes mellitus should be prescribed the drug in the form of a solution without dextrose.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is not recommended to use the drug during pregnancy and during breastfeeding.
