Yod-Ka is an antiseptic for external and local use.
Release form and composition
The drug is produced in the form of a solution for local and external use: a dark brown liquid, with a specific iodine odor (10 ml each in a brown glass bottle with a plastic screw cap with a spatula; 25 ml each in a brown glass bottle with a spray; 50 each ml in a brown glass bottle with a plastic screw cap with a pipette; each bottle with instructions for the use of Yod-Ka in a cardboard box).
100 ml of solution contains:
- active substance: povidone iodine - 10 g (corresponds to free iodine in the amount of 0.9-1.2 g);
- additional components: citric acid, sodium hydroxide solution 10%, glycerol, sodium hydrogen phosphate, purified water.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Yod-Ka is an antiseptic and disinfectant. After release from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone, iodine, in contact with the skin, interacts with proteins and forms iodamines, coagulates them, and as a result, leads to the death of microorganisms.
Iodine-Ka exhibits a fast bactericidal effect against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of Mycobacterium tuberculosis). It is also characterized by activity against viruses, fungi and protozoa. Shows a longer lasting effect when compared to inorganic iodine solution.
Pharmacokinetics
With local use of Yod-Ka, the absorption of iodine from the surface of the skin and mucous membrane of wounds is almost not fixed.
Indications for use
- therapy of fungal, bacterial and viral infectious skin lesions;
- therapy / prevention of wound infections in traumatology, surgery, combustiology;
- treatment of trophic ulcers, diabetic feet, bedsores;
- disinfection of the skin adjacent to drains, catheters, probes;
- disinfection of the skin in preparation for surgical interventions and invasive studies (biopsy, puncture, injections, etc.).
Contraindications
- Duhring's dermatitis herpetiformis;
- adenoma of the thyroid gland;
- severe disorders of the thyroid gland, including hyperthyroidism;
- thyrotoxicosis;
- condition before and after the use of radioactive iodine in the treatment of hyperthyroidism (until complete recovery);
- the neonatal period (especially in premature babies);
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- hypersensitivity to any of the Yod-Ka components.
Yod-Ka, instructions for use: method and dosage
The Yod-Ka solution is used externally.
The drug is applied directly to the problem surface, capturing healthy tissue adjacent to the damaged area.
Side effects
Contact with the solution on the mucous membrane of the eye can provoke allergic reactions, burning sensation and lacrimation.
In the presence of a predisposition, in rare cases, the development of iodine hyperthyroidism is possible.
As a result of intensive treatment with povidone-iodine of burn wounds, electrolyte imbalance may occur with serum osmolality with metabolic acidosis or impaired renal function.
If there is an aggravation of the severity of any of the above side effects or the appearance of any other adverse reactions, you should seek the advice of your doctor.
Overdose
Until now, no cases of overdose of the drug Iod-Ka have been recorded. If an overdose is suspected, symptomatic treatment is recommended.
special instructions
Avoid getting the drug in the eyes.
The use of povidone iodine can reduce the absorption of iodine by the thyroid gland, which in turn can affect the results of some tests and procedures (determination of iodine bound to proteins; thyroid scintigraphy, diagnostic procedures using radioactive iodine). This may interfere with the planned therapy of thyroid lesions with iodine. For its successful implementation, after completion of treatment with povidone-iodine, it is required to wait an interval of at least 1–4 weeks.
The oxidizing properties of the drug can cause false positive results in diagnostic tests such as the measurement of hemoglobin and glucose in urine and feces using guaiac gums and toluidine.
The oxidative effects of povidone iodine can also corrode metals, while synthetic materials and plastics are generally not sensitive to its effects. It is extremely rare for a color change, which in most cases is restored.
From textiles or other materials, the solution is usually easily removed with warm water and soap. For stubborn stains, use ammonia or sodium thiosulfate solution.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and complex mechanisms
The Yod-Ka solution does not negatively affect the ability to drive vehicles and work with other complex mechanisms.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
There is no sufficient information on the use of an antiseptic in pregnant and breastfeeding women. As a result, drug therapy during pregnancy / lactation is contraindicated.
Pediatric use
The use of Yod-Ka during the neonatal period (especially in premature babies) is contraindicated.
Drug interactions
- other antiseptics, hydrogen peroxide, enzyme preparations, agents containing taurolidine and silver for treating wounds: there is a mutual weakening of effectiveness;
- mercury preparations: the formation of alkaline mercury iodide is observed; such combinations are contraindicated;
- lithium preparations: it is recommended to avoid prolonged use of povidone-iodine, especially in large areas, when combined treatment with preparations containing lithium;
- proteins and unsaturated organic complexes: development of interaction reactions is possible;
- reducing substances, tannic acid, alkaloid salts, salicylic acid, silver, mercury and bismuth salts: incompatibility of these agents with povidone iodine has been noted.
Analogs
Analogs of Iod-Ka are Brownodin B. Brown, Betadine, Iodovidone, Povidone-iodine, Aquazan, Povidone-Iodine + Potassium iodide, etc.
Terms and conditions of storage
Store out of the reach of children, protected from light, at a temperature of 5–20 ° C.
The shelf life is 3 years.
Terms of dispensing from pharmacies
Available without a prescription.
Reviews about Yod-Ka
Patients leave mostly positive reviews about Iod-Ka in which they note that the drug is an effective antiseptic for the treatment of infectious skin lesions, the prevention of wound infections, as well as for disinfection of the skin before invasive studies. Many people believe that the solution contained in vials equipped with a spray bottle or a spatula cap is much more convenient to use than iodine in a bottle with an ordinary cap.
Sometimes there are complaints that Yod-Ka is very poorly absorbed, and it is difficult to handle large areas of the affected skin with a plastic spatula; for these purposes, it is recommended to use cotton swabs.
