Composition of 1 ml drops:
- active substance: benoxinate hydrochloride (oxybuprocaine hydrochloride) - 4 mg;
- auxiliary components: edetate disodium - 0.1 mg; sodium chloride - 8 mg; benzalkonium chloride - 0.1 mg; boric acid - 19 mg; water for injection - up to 1 ml.
Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Benoxinate hydrochloride is a local anesthetic that blocks nerve endings; when used topically, it penetrates well into tissues. In comparison with tetracaine and other anesthetics used in ophthalmology, it has less irritating effect on the cornea and conjunctiva.
The development of surface anesthesia of the cornea and conjunctiva is observed after 30 seconds, the effect lasts for 15 minutes.
Pharmacokinetics
After a single instillation of the drug into the conjunctival cavity, it easily penetrates into the corneal stroma. Over the next 15 minutes, a quantitative decrease in the stromal concentration of the substance is observed, which leads to a 12-15 minute period of anesthesia.
Indications for use
Inocaine eye drops are prescribed to provide pain relief in ophthalmology during the following interventions:
- extraction of foreign bodies and sutures from the conjunctiva and cornea;
- measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry);
- diagnostic scraping of the conjunctiva;
- gonioscopy;
- short surgical operations on the conjunctiva and cornea.
For pregnant and lactating women, the drug should be administered with caution.
Contraindications
A contraindication to the use of the drug is the presence of an individual intolerance to its components.
Instructions for the use of Inocaine: method and dosage
Inocaine eye drops are applied topically - 1 drop in the conjunctival sac.
To provide long-term anesthesia (up to 1 hour), three times instillation is prescribed with an interval of 4–5 minutes.
Side effects
Possible side reactions: short tingling sensation, flushing and burning of the conjunctiva, allergic reactions; rarely - keratitis.
Overdose
There is no information on overdose.
special instructions
Drops cannot be used for injection.
Long-term and repeated use can cause permanent corneal opacity.
During anesthesia, the eye must be protected from rubbing, irritating chemicals and foreign bodies.
For long-term complex therapy of eye diseases, the drug is not used.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
For pregnant and lactating women, Inocaine should be prescribed with caution, after assessing the ratio of the expected benefit to the possible risk (due to the lack of experience with the drug in this group of patients).
Drug interactions
With the simultaneous introduction of oxybuprocaine and other traditionally used eye drops into the conjunctival cavity, both positive and negative effects can be observed.
In theory, oxybuprocaine can reduce the antibacterial activity of sulfonamides.
Analogs
An analogue of Inocaine is Benoxi.
